Town Council squabbles over new facilities

Residents driving by Tyrone’s Town Hall Thursday night might have felt the heat emanating from the building on a cold November night.

The fireworks started when the town started discussing a new town hall and police station. Mayor Sheryl Lee recused herself from discussion because a potential site for the town hall bordered her property, but she first addressed rumors that were swirling through the town.

“Some people said have sold my property to (developer) Mr. Clark, but that’s not true,” she said.

The developer had approached the town about building a new town hall in a new development that he was thinking about doing in the city’s downtown.

Another issue in the convoluted discussion was the issue of impact fees. When Tyrone implemented impact fees years ago, it had earmarked some of the funds for new municipal buildings.

“If the funds are not used after five years, we have to refund the money to the developers,” said Councilman Mike Smola.

The town is looking at refunding more than $64,000 unless it starts work on engineering work or securing a site for the new facilities.

Councilman Grace Caldwell said the consensus during executive session discussions about the proposal for a new town hall was not to pursue any additional land. She said any new facilities should be built on the present sites, but said something had to be done about the deplorable conditions in the police department’s basement.

“You can’t breathe in that basement. Those stuffed animals that they are supposed to give kids are covered in mold,” she said.

Caldwell said there was no plan for new facilities and that impact fees for the new buildings had been diverted to recreation funding.

“I want this issue put on the ballot for the residents to decide,” she said.

Smola counter Caldwell’s claims and wanted to know where money would come from for the new police department if the money was refunded to the developers.

“Barry can look in the budget and find it,” Caldwell said.

Councilman Paul Letourneau was disgusted by the whole matter.

“You’re extremely shortsighted because Tyrone is going to change,” he said.

The council took no action on the issue.

have any "hidden agenda". The way the story is told in the paper makes Caldwell look like she is trying to give the empact fees back to the developers. I wasn't there, but you can carve it in stone that Gloria and Grace put the people in Tyrone ahead of the developers. They both ran to let the taxpayers have more of a say in what is going on. The fact that Calwell is quoted as wanting to put it on the ballot for the taxpayers speaks volumes about what was really said. I would trust those 2 any day...Gloria and Grace are honest and for the people and can not be bought! They are both "spit fires".. that is why I call them friend!

There were no rummors about anyone wanting to buy "their land" and "excuse" themselves was there? There is no hanky panky with them... they both ran for office cause they felt we needed someone to watch what was going on for us....they have..much to the ire of some people!

Mike Smola is all about equality. Everyone hates him equally, builders and citizens alike.

It's our life, the eco-greenies can shove it!

Care to expatiate on your crass remarks? I am confused as to where your diatribe relates to "eco-greenies".

Do you know what impact fees are for? (Hint: Not for eco-greenies)

Please help me to understand your hostility toward ecologists.

"they said" it showed my licence being revolked

They didn't take you to jail for your light being out, but for the driving with a revoked license. And "they", meaning the Tyrone police officer, was going by what he was told by his dispatcher (Fayetteville City police being the only ones with the computers in their cars around here). So you've got 2 humans and 1 computer, right there (and the info in the computer is only as good as the person entering it)... errors can happen, but fortunately it is VERY rare for it to be bad enough that a person is arrested and shouldn't be.

The officer was doing his job, with the information he had at the time. I really am sorry that you were treated like a criminal, but that is what you appeared to be, based on the information at hand.

You would be surprised at how many people really do drive on a suspended license (which is a crime). Young, old, and in-between. If law enforcement paid less attention to a crime because of the age of a person (old or young), they'd miss alot.

I won! Overkill is alive and well in Tyrone...but...the good thing is...this... little old lady will be gone...and whatever...buys my house...I hope really gives them what they deserve for picking "easy" targets! If you pick on the nice ones....guess what it gonna be left! It isn't my problem...it will be Tyrones...and they will have their hands full and they will have created their own problems by tyring to drum up more revenue by harassing the taxpayers...Ho HO...get you self some 'renters" that is just what you need... good by! Heee Heee!

From your tone I can guess that you won't be sending any parting gifts.

In other words, don't go away mad, just go away.

Once you move into your "glue job house" in Luthersville, make sure you check your tail lights and current insurance card before you leave your driveway. Maybe you can avoid the problems you had in Tyrone.

have a great life.
