Sandy Creek’s fantastic volleyball season came to an end on Thursday night, while Starr’s Mill’s dream season will continue on to the Class AAAA state finals tomorrow.

The Lady Panthers (41-10) defeated Woodward Academy in five games, 25-22, 25-12, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11. They will now take on Marist at Marietta High School tomorrow at 4 p.m. for the Class AAAA state championship. Starr’s Mill faced Marist on Aug. 24 and lost 25-17, 25-20. It was the two teams only meeting this year.

The Lady Patriots fell to Blessed Trinity in four games, 27-29, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15. Sandy Creek finished the season with a record of 50-12 and will return their entire squad next year.

Any body happen to see the poor sportsmanship by the Starr's Mill's fans in the finals of the state volleyball championship? The crowd turned their backs when Marists' players were announced. How do you spell c-l-a-s-s or lack thereof?

I played that night, and I would have rather that sign of disrespect from the Starr's Mill fans than the treatment I received from Marist. Fans of Marist would single girls out to make degrading and crude comments about their appearance, a play, etc. Not to mention the incredibly arrogant "Our team's hotter!" cheer and the tune of a circus when a player from Starr's Mill would make an error. I think its crucial that you attend other sporting events played by different schools because class is not something often viewed. Neither team displayed perfect sportsmanship, but I think it is completely unfair and dense to point out only Starr's Mill's mistakes.

I am truly sorry that you had to hear those comments from the terrible Marist fans. No student athlete should ever be put through that. Please try to continue to enjoy the sport of volleyball. You guys just made Marist very nervous. And to your credit, your team mates and yourself were a great example for our city. Thank you for your sportsmanship.

Please don't sit on the bench or stand on the floor and listen to what comes out of your own parents' mouths. I am sorry that Marist said those things. Didn't your parent s teach you that two wrongs don't make a right? Oh yeah, your parents are the ones yelling crazy things at the ref and coaches from the stands. My bad.

Do you always pick on high school kids? Do you always make fun of kids parents? I asume singe you are gay and don't have kids it's easy for you to do that.

IF you were there - and I doubt you were since your 'wildkittens' were booted OUT of it by all the GOOD teams... then you would have known what class the players showed .... it has been widly blogged on GHSA vents. As has the sportsmanship - or lack of it of the 'wildkittens'.

Hey coach, pick on someone your own age.

suser is a Whitewater coach/fan who is upset that they didn't make the playoffs..... maybe next year they can pay off the ref and get a player or two from Clayton county - wink wink.

What's embarassing is that you failed to mention the high class and good sportsmanship on behalf of the team or to congratulate Starr's Mill for being second in the state. Just another 'wildcat' parent or coach..... what a group! Nice job looking for the negative!

I bet you are one of those big jumbo shemales that coaches softball for whitewater - still mad that Starr's Mill for being kicked into the loser braket in the state playoffs by Starr's Mill.

You don't expect us to believe you are just some random person with nothing to do on a Saturday but go to vollyball in North Atlanta do you?? That's funny Smiling

I am guessing that you are referring to Whitewater, which by the way, I have absolutely no affiliation with. And what's wrong with watching volleyball matches on the northside when you have an excellent setter on Marist who has signed with GA Tech and a great outside hitter on Marist who has signed with College of Charleston? Wake up main frame and attend fun sporting events. I admit the parents and fans are so totally out of control at high school sporting events that it is laughable. Has anyone ever felt like participating in high school sports should be fun?? And shame on you for your shemale comment. As I mentioned before, I have nothing to do with Whitewater and the fact that you are a bit homophobic shouldn't even have been brought up in your comment. What do you do on the weekend for fun, MainFrame? Just bash other high schools and their coaches? My point of my comment is that it is great that Starr's Mill made it that far, but please let's raise our kids to rise about that terrible sportsmanship. In 20 years, is it really gonna matter that Marist screamed whatever? No it won't matter. Will it matter that Starr's Mill turned their backs? No. My point is that we have a great community here and we don't need to display bad sportsmanship.

Main Frame, My intent is never to attck the girls. They did an excellent job. Their parents? They get over excited and yell some things. All parents do. I just wish that for the players, everyone could act a little better. I just hate to see any students or parents behaving that way at a sporting event that is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable event for kids. Multiple personality disorder? It would be great if you had some positive things to blog about, but no all I see is your reference to stirring the pot, etc. Your bashing of people is a little out there as well. But I must admit it is fun.....almost as much fun as driving to the northside for a volleyball game Smiling all in good fun and blogging main frame.

That fayette county as a whole is going to emerge soon as the elite powerhouse in Volleyball for the entire state. No need to worry about Marist much anymore, the mechanism is in place to make sure that the cheating academies will no longer have the unfair advantage over the public schools that has produced that long string of state championship wins for them. 4 time state champ Woodward was the first to fall to a very talented SMHS team. Next year it'll be Marist, bank on it. If the GHSA would enforce their own rules, the private schools wouldn't have the advantage anyway, but as it is, the talented ladies from Sandy Creek, McIntosh, SMHS or Whitewater are going to show everyone that team work and unity can overcome star-studded, "academic" scholarship-boosted, academy teams.

Oh yeah, I'm not sure who said it, or in what context, but the Wildcats/kittens/whatever you want to call them did make the state tournament. They would have been the second seed from our area if the court at Mcintosh's gym was level...

Starr's Mill alone has 11 state championships in 10 years .... between McIntosh, Fayette County HS, Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill Fayette County is already a powerhouse ... in everything.

Regardless of whether you talk SAT scores, graduation rates, Band performances, Debate, Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, Football (Starr's Mill has made the state playoffs 8 times in 10 years in 5A, 4A and 3A), Baseball, Soccer, Vollyball, Tennis, or whatever area you choose (even track and cross country)other than basketball- :-0 Fayette County has been in the top of the state for several years.

Newsweek magazine proclaims Starr's Mill as one of the top high schools in America. Atlanta magazine says it is a top ten. McIntosh leads the county and often the state among SAT scores among public(non-magnet) schools in the state - only Starr's Mill has ever beaten McIntosh in the county.

Until this year, Fayette County schools had been tops in test scores. Fayette County still leads all other state systems in number of scholarships to Military Academies. Starr's MIll leads all schools nationally in the number of full scholarships to the Military Academies.

Sandy Creek and Fayette, McIntosh and Starr's Mill have a long and distinguished history of excellence.

This fact is precisly why the Whitewater arrogance of claiming to be "The Only Real Cat in Town" is offensive. The reality is that Whitewater is the ONLY school in the county with NO championships, no accomplishments, and no history of success. What you do have is a car load of guns, a pattern of arrogance, a failure to report SAT scores and a group of ahtletes from Clayton County who are creating a problem.

We would love to welcome you in to the county family of successful schools but the reality is, you have alienated yourself from all of us - not just the "Cats" (even the Patriots and the Chiefs) and until you learn some humility and show you belong the top with the rest of us your arrogance is simply adding fuel to the perverbial fire.

Come on up here - the view is GREAT!

I'm not sure why you choose to attack me on this one Mainframe, but here's the fact of the matter. The only arrogance and condescension I find in this post is from you, and a little from Suser. No need to get up on your high horse, I've been in this county for 35 years, I know the truth about who's a powerhouse in what.

I went to school with Phil Gray, I was there when the courthouse was blown up, and I remember when all the fill in stations were full service and the best thing about going to the Farmer's and Merchants bank was getting a toy Fayette County Tigers Football, a schedule and a dum dums. I bought tires from Jake Mask when his shop was on the square and lawn equipment from Travis Hardware. I was here when Jack Day Park was a park. I practiced soccer there before there was lightning; George Wingo was my Coach and just a CPA then. There was no McIntosh then. I'm sure you don't know anything about what I'm saying, I shouldn't ramble.

The point is I was here when McIntosh was new (like Whitewater is today) and there was the same kind of "new kid on the block" insecure arrogance going on then that you have no patience for now.

Please don't confuse me with a football fan. I like football but as the user name implies, it's really just volleyball I care about. We're (volleyball fans) are a much more cerebral lot than the football people. You have taken the views and attitudes of an ignorant few and applied them to a large group. I'm sorry you ran into some football fans that are low caliber, not all of them are that way.

We'll not need you invitation or your welcome. Our school is full of talented professionals and young people. We'll earn our spot in time with due diligence. We're not going to sit around and wait for any respect from anyone because there's no way we'll get it whether we've earned it or not.

Part of our problem is communication because I know very little about football and you're not nearly as into volleyball as I am. Everyone is into McIntosh volleyball to some extent because they are a perennial powerhouse in the sport, everybody loves a winner. The girls from Whitewater are working hard to bring the first championship for the school (with apologies to the wrestler who was already brought an individual state title to the school) so that we can establish it as a volleyball school. I believe they will do it because they went a long way from last year to next and the entire squad is coming back. There are plenty of "football" schools out there. Nobody needs another...

Whoever posted about Northgate, I want to agree. Despite bad coaching, there's a great group of girls playing there that will emerge next year as a very strong team as well.

You may wish to re-read my blogs to suser (not to you); however, blaming your loss on a floor saying "They would have been the second seed from our area if the court at Mcintosh's gym was level..." is a bit bizarre.

Check me if I am wrong but don't you change sides in Vollball every game? You all played on the same floor didn't you?

As I made clear in my previous blog to you when I named you personally, (which you have chosen to ignore)I harbor no ill will and no critisism to you or yours. As for your slap at the intellect, or lack thereof, of football fans compared to you vollyball fans - I will ignore it.

It is the "only real cats in town" (that is painted on your gym wall) group I find so distasteful and arrogant. If you are in that group - then I indeed mean you as well. If you are not in that group - again - I mean no offense to you or yours. If you find that offensive then so be it! It's my opinion - just like your opinion of football fans being less intelligent than vollyball fans is your opinion.

P.S. I really don't need a history lesson about Fayette County - I have lived here my entire life and so has my family (That sees your 35 and raises you about 30 more). When McIntosh, Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill opened none of them were as arrogant as Whitewater nor did they claim to be the "only ANYTHING in town".

It really seems you would remember that since you pre-date several of the Masks, the Huddlestons, the Trammels, the Ellisons, the Kerlins, the truck stop on 85 and Jordan Salvage etc.

If you were a volleyball person you'd know that the area match was a 7 on 6 affair with the MVP for McIntosh going the official who called a lopsided game, thus the "unlevel" court. I was trying to be nice and not out him, he's a good official, he just allowed prejudgment to blur his ability to see that the WHS girls shut down the ever-powerful offense of McIntosh and then used team work to outplay them. I've got video (you're welcome to come and check it out at anytime) of the official in that third game handing McIntosh 6 points). Nobody spots McIntosh 6 points and wins, nobody.

The reason why Starr's Mill swept MHS three games straight in the area final is because they were exhausted after a tough 3 game set against us, then another nail biter-lengthy match against Starr's Mill that went 3 games as well. I was really impressed that MHS won that one, not a lot of teams beat SMHS (who has a legend for a coach, if you follow the game for real, I'm sure you're heard of her) this year. It cost them though.

Unfortunately the WHS girls offered little opposition to the SMHS girls, for whatever reason (probably mentally drained after the rout with McIntosh), in the loser bracket finals. We just served to keep them warm really.

I can't control what they put on the gym wall. Nor can I control the fact that fights break out at football games, people vandalize schools after them, they make personal attacks rather than discuss facts and they forget readily that we're dealing with children here. I'm not trying to say that Volleyball fans are better than football fans. I'm saying that the players and fans from SMHS, MHS, WHS, SCHS, Northgate, and East Coweta are normally much more civil to one another. These are the facts. Here's why:

Most of these girls play together during club season, which is a 6 month ordeal that starts around now and isn't over till April or May, July if we have a good season. My daughter cheers for all the FC schools when they're playing someone else because those players are some of her closest friends. Their parents are some of my closest friends and that means we cheer for them too, whether they're playing against my team or not.

The "truck stop" on 85 was called the US station. The northern most exit points directly to the approach path for Willow Pond airport. How can you drop names (and slant me for doing so) and not mention the Redwines? They sold the FC land to all the names you mentioned.

And you couldn't be more wrong about "none of them were as arrogant as Whitewater nor did they claim to be the "only ANYTHING in town". They were and they did, we'll have to just disagree because if we were both here, we saw different things.

I assure you I'm not offended, I just wish I knew more about football or you know more about volleyball so we could have a more applicable exchange. The one thing I do know about football is that the WHS head coach is very good and that's going to make a difference in the coming years as we overcome our growing pains.

Good call BTW comparing WHS state wins to those of MHS. How many state championships did MHS produce in it's first four years of exixtence? Thank you...

Submitted by lou2589 on Tue, 04/03/2007 - 9:12pm.

I stumbled across this board, and it amazed me on how much it grew from my initial infuriated rant to suser's critism. Which I am still a little irritated by... I understand what you mean, but you really shouldn't insult the lesser of the two evils. None the less...

I don't want to sound like I am taking anything away from WHS's efforts, but the reason we beat MHS in the finals was not due to the wildcats tiring the chiefs out. The Chiefs could have killed us (the same was they had twice prior) but they didn't. And that is all SMHS, no help from any other cat in town.

You might be right, you vollyball guys really are smarter than football fans!

Here are YOUR words:

"the MVP for McIntosh going the official who called a lopsided game, thus the "unlevel" court. I was trying to be nice and not out him"

and "...the WHS girls shut down the ever-powerful offense of McIntosh and then used team work to outplay them. I've got video". (but lost?) Wow!

If that wasn't enough ...

"The reason why Starr's Mill swept MHS three games straight in the area final is because they were exhausted after a tough 3 game set against us" Gee, that is amazing stuff!

And then ....

"Unfortunately the WHS girls offered little opposition to the SMHS girls, for whatever reason (probably mentally drained after the rout with McIntosh)"

You are so bright! Just being able to recognize and analyze this all so well makes you a true intellectual giant! Us dumb football guys stand in awe!

As for your one question:

How many state championships did MHS produce in it's first four years of exixtence?

The answer is two. (You have one too by the way- did you know that?)

** While Football is a traditionally weak sport at McIntosh, McIntosh has strong athletic programs in soccer, volleyball, track, tennis, and other sports as well as one of the best academic records of any public school in Georgia, including the highest SAT scores in Fayette County for 2005 and 2006. Oh, by the way - McIntosh has the only golfcart parking lot at a high school in the world. Pretty neat huh?

Thanks for asking!

I wish we had gone with a different mascot as well, there's too many cats in FC as it is if you ask me. I agree with you 100%. The southside volleyball is going to rule. (it already is ruling) And even if Main Frame thinks this is meant as 'picking on high school girls" , it isn't. It's the arrogance of the Whitewater football fans that everyone seems to hate. They are the most arrogant people you have ever seen. "The only catsin town" is a slogan they use even though Fayette County Tigers and Starr's Mill Panthers have been there longer and have both region and state championships. What they should say is the "only cats in town without any titles".
