Widening of Highway 74 Rips The Gut of Our City

Those who have driven 74 in the past week or so between the Avenues and Crosstown Road are witnessing the gutting of the city that we have accustomed to enjoy. Widening the road, while necessary to accommodate the inevitable growth, is a sad event. What is particularly disturbing is the quick destruction of the trees which took so long to mature, being cut down like match sticks in a matter of a few minutes. In addition to the elimination of the trees, we now look right into the dining rooms and heretofore private back yards of the homes backing up on to highway 74. With all of this in mind, do we really want to extend TDK into Coweta County? Think hard about the consequences of unbridled development and the ugly demolition and resulting loss of peace and privacy. Progress is not turning a thing of beauty into something ugly.

Once they put in the Avenue the speed limit was lowered considerably.
I got a nice big fat ticket in that nice little speed trap. I am hoping for the speed limit to be raised to atleast 50 instead of 40.
In the mean time I vow not to go 65 in a 40 Eye-wink

we really have ZERO recourse. It's been needing to be widened for some time. I also hate the loss of trees, but obviously, the state had the right of way already, as I've nothing about it being bought. I travel this route almost daily, and the lack of a backup when they finish it will be nice. It should have been done years ago.

IF it was Peachtree Parkway, Riley, etc, I would be MUCH more concerned.

The state transportation guys didn't have to widen Highway 74 to SIX LANES. It's the additional two lanes that are ripping out most of the trees and exposing the houses.

There is no doubt that Peachtree City is losing the laid-back, flush with trees feel it once had. McDonoughDawg likes the idea because it reminds him of Henry County - hip, hip hurray.

It's all PTC's idea? If you show me, I'll believe you.

Why do you think I moved here in the first place? Massive growth came to Henry County, there was ZERO done to accomodate for it. I've lived in the midst of that, and it's not good. You should be thankful something is being done before it gets out of hand. Of all the areas around Metro Atlanta, I think PTC is doing a better job of handling the growth than any of them. Is it perfect? No way, but show me an area doing better and we'll talk about it.

I would MUCH rather see something pro-actively to help with the situation, than to sit and wallow in gridlock wondering why the road is still 2 lanes.

2ndly, if you know how to STOP the growth around us, let me know. I'll be all for it. I'm waiting....

Your comments about Henry County coming out of the same mouth of the guy who favors the TDK road and Coweta Growth and the newly proposed bigger box stores in Peachtree City. You don't want to slow growth down, you want to excelerate it. Your comments have always been "it's fine with me."

Peachtree City was doing a great job of handling the growth until guys like you moved here and became the pro-growth cheerleaders.

Where you against 74 being 4 laned to I-85?

Where you against 54 West being 4 laned toward Newnan?

I asked if you knew how to stop the growth, no reply.

IF you can't see the benefits of improving roads before you add business's, then we can't communicate.

Again, where have I been in favor of changing zoning in Peachtree City?

The home I live in is 24 years old, and Peachtee Parkway used to stop at McIntosh Trail, should we have stopped there? Why not at just the original core north of 54 around Flat Creek Golf Course. Fact is, things will change, and we need to manage it VERY well.

Lastly, I asked you for a link that it was Peachtee City's idea to go 6 lanes. The state has obviously had the right of way for a LONG time, I feel sorry for the people backing up to the State Highway, but we all knew it was just that, a state highway. I would be in favor of some type of relief for those folks, would you?

jmatute, if you remember earlier in the year we were told sound walls would be built along 74, so don't worry you will not be looking into houses you will be looking at lovely sound walls! But that is ok, when I brought it up then, I was told by people on this site, no big deal, don't be alarmed. I guess we are the only ones who would rather look at trees. I am glad I am not alone.

SandySue, I'm sure this being PTC there will be landscaping in front of those sound walls and we need to move the traffic through our town efficiently or maybe you don't mind sitting in it going north on Hwy 74 in the morning? Then again, I remember PTC when the only way to 85 was a two lane road going through Tyrone. Maybe we should have left it that way and decided not to let the "evil developers" build your subdivision! Relax change is good and progress happens. It's good for our economy and even if we don't like it initially we all adjust and adapt.

Good thoughts valleygirl. Accept growth that is inevitable - and necessary to move all of us - old, new, kids adults, visitors from Coweta, anti-growth nimby's - all of us around and through the city quickly and efficiently.

Anyone notice that after 2 or more years of ugly and disruptive construction how nice and effifient Highway 54 west is now? Same thing will happen on 74 plus we'll get some more businesses located in the industrial park. And yes sandysue, it is an industrial park, so maybe we should recognize that industry of some type is going to be there along with trucks and trains and planes.

Y'all must be developers I can tell. Controlled growth is good, or no growth is even better as far as I am concerned. If I want crowds I go to New York or San Francisco or even move up to North Fulton. My choice is to not live in it. The best thing that ever happened to PTC was the building moratorium in 2001, I think that was the year. Bring back Brown, Rapson and Weed... the council that put the people before themselves. You know it is true, come on admit it.

Miz Judy Williams, a great teacher, told us back in the Seventies, "when this baby boom retires, there will be a slow-down in the National economy, or another tide of immigrants coming in to take the jobs and dilute the wages".
