The Fred goes raw

Non “The Phenomenon” Gyuinn faces Jerry Burns in one of the six pro fights last Saturday night at the Southside Slugfest held at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Gyuinn won the fight very quickly, as did many of the fighters on the card that night. In fact, only one fight, the first one, went all three rounds and had to be decided by the judges. Event promoter Cory Nestlehutt also won his match early in the first round. Nestlehutt and all involved with the event seemed pleased by the turnout and the behavior of the capacity crowd. He added after his fight that he hoped to bring another mixed martial arts event to “The Fred” in the summer of 2007.

What does it say about an event that requires the show promoters or venue to hire close to 20 off-duty police officers and sheriff's deputies for security? And due to the nature of the event, a PTC ambulance was on stand-by at the amphitheater. Meanwhile, there were so many medical calls in PTC that a Fayette County ambulance had to respond to one of them. Fortunately it was not a life or death situation, and fortunately all the firemen are also EMT's, but the engines do not carry the same equipment as the ambulances (of course). THIS time, it wasn't an issue. Hopefully it never will be.

The lighting could have been better, though....
