A Driving Lesson for Fayette County Drivers

To the lady with the loose middle finger who almost ran me down........When you are approaching an intersection with the intention to turn left and the opposing traffic is turning right, also with a green light, the person turning right ALWAYS ! has the right of way, even if they have a Yield sign. That traffic light takes controls the intersection. So, if we encounter again you will suffer the consequences.

dave029, what specific intersection are you referring to?

Can you give us the specifics?

When I asked a FCSO about the intersection of Hwy.74 and Redwine Road, I got a different answer then the one you telling us.

Who decides to put yeild signs up at intersections with traffic lights? Seems to me that when we spend the money for sophisticated traffic signals that we could to without yeild signs. I have lived many places in Georgia and this is the only one where there are two separate types of traffic controls at an intersection. All these blogs prove that yeild signs and traffic light just confuse people and make traffic worse.

My friend hit someone at one of these screwed up intesections and he got a ticket becuase he did not yeild even though he had the green light. Green means go and red means stop! Oh, unless there is a yeild sign there that I may or may not even be able to see.

Yield on green?

I only know this because it has long annoyed me that people turn left in front of me!! I finally asked a Peachtree City police officer about it and was told that as long as I was making a right turn at a traffic signal and I had a green light, I had the right away. Actually, yield signs should read: Yield – on red. Maybe that’s why Yield signs are red. If you check at major intersections (74-54 being one) you will see a sign hanging that says “left turn yield on green”.

So, bad_ptc, wocdam, and mudcat (and any from the second and third blogs), I’m sorry but you are wrong on this one. Check with the local police if you doubt my word. I drive north on 74 going home and turn right on Jenkins road where there are three schools. I have had school bus drivers make a left turn in front of me (and there is the hanging sign “left turn yield on green)!! I had a lady make a left turn right in front of me at 74 and Crosstown. She was on her cell phone (another gripe of mine) and then went slower than slow in front of me! Drive it or park it lady!!

Dave029, I am with you! And I am so glad to finally know that I am not the only driver that is irritated by this. Somehow, drivers in Georgia need to be educated. Any ideas out there on how we can accomplish this?

Move back out of Georgia.

is only found at intersections where there is an arrow for the left turn. If there is no arrow and only a green light, then the person turning left has the right of way. Hit me next time and find out who gets the ticket!

Look at the intersection on Hwy 54 in front of McDonalds/Chic-fil-a.
It is a 3-way intersection. There is no stop sign/traffic signal involved at this intersection. Eastbound 54 has 3 lanes there, two go straight and a left hand turn lane into shopping center/ McDonalds. Westbound 54 traffic has four lanes. One lane on the left to make a U-turn only (there is no street to turn left), two lanes go straight west, the right lane turn only into the shopping center. The right hand turn lane has a yield sign. Who would they yield to? The only possibility is traffic from the eastbound left turn lane. There can't be any other traffic unless someone leaving the shopping center is trying to make a U-turn to go back in?

The next intersection on 54 to the east is the one in front of BP.
It is a four way intersection, also without signal. There are stop signs on the side street but 54 traffic does not stop. I think the Hwy 54 left turn lanes have the dreaded yield signs. Do the cars on 54, turning left have to yield to cars from the side street who are darting across 54?

What are those yield signs for?

GEORGIA DRIVERS MANUAL 2005

Yielding Right-of-Way: Always yield right-of-way to pedestrians, motor vehicles, bicyclists or anyone else who moves into the intersection before you.

Triangle signs mean yield. You must slow down to a speed that is reasonable for existing conditions and stop if necessary. If you must stop, do so at a marked stop line, if it exists. After slowing or stopping, you must yield the right-of-way to other vehicles in the intersection or approaching closely on another roadway or auxiliary road leading into a major highway.

When approaching a yield sign, slow down to a speed reasonable for existing conditions, and if it is necessary to stop for the purpose of safety, follow the procedure outlined for stop signs.

It’s the same in all states. The law is Federal, not state.

The red triangle means YIELD, because someone other than you has the right-of-way.

Now I’m wondering what other traffic laws “dave029” is unaware of.

Dave, In any other state, turning right at the light would give you the right-of-way, but not here. You have to YIELD when there is a yield sign. Yes, it was rude for her to give you the bird, but she was correct. Yes, it's backwards and it's wacked, but that's Georgia for you!

Chill out and read the rules. Yield means yield and if you don't and the cops find the yield sign you ignored - you lose.
