School rezoning will affect property values

The Fayette County Board of Education wants to re-zone north PTC neighborhood schools from Booth Middle School to Flat Rock Middle School and McIntosh High School to Sandy Creek High School.

North PTC homeowners pay PTC taxes and expect to send their children to PTC schools. However, the Fayette County Board of Education, in their infinite wisdom, have chosen that this is not the case. PTC residents should have their children bused to Tyrone/Fayette County Schools. I am trying to understand the thought process that drives us to this decision.

I am a north PTC resident. Recently my taxes were increased on a new property value assessment. I did so willingly knowing my children would receive a good education in PTC schools. We considered it an investment in our children.

What will happen to my property values now that I can no longer send my children to schools in PTC with the highest SAT scores? My child can no longer take a golf cart to school, but will add to the increasing/dangerous morning traffic headed north on Ga. Highway 74.

Personally speaking, I down-sized and maintained my PTC residences giving up a larger home to ensure my children would reap the benefits of a PTC education. This right appears to be in jeopardy based on decisions made quickly and quietly by the Fayette County Board of Education.

PTC citizens, act now. The Fayette County Board of Education, if what we know now is true, is acting in a nefarious way and it will not be tolerated by me and my neighbors.

Even if you have no children in the school system, property values are impacted significantly based on the schools children attend. Remember Georgia is among the lowest ranked schools in the country and PTC schools are among the best in the state. Please communicate your frustration to the school board before it is too late.

Robert Kennedy once said "Some men see things as they are and ask 'Why?' I dream things that never were and ask, 'Why not?'"
Why can't we have our own school system? Isn't it time we began to consider the idea? Georgia has one of the worst school systems in the Country. Clearly, the status quo is not working.

What you should do is find Billy Payne and kick his butt for tearing down Terchwood Homes and moving a large majority of the section 8 properties to - PTC! I think it's now called Harmony Village. Now that we are past that rant .... you don't have the tax base in PTC to support a school system large enough to accomodate your numbers (ironic I know). The problem with a 'bedroom community' like PTC with limited business taxes is that your tax base is relatively small and schools are very very expensive (construction is actually the cheap part- about 12-30 million per school average)). In addition, you have to go through the state of Georgia if you wish to add a school district. Robert Kennedy also said “One-fifth of the people are against everything all the time.” so you would only have 80% support at best.

You're still going to be taxed at the current rate plus the cost of the "new" schools. So you, us, will have to pay twice for the privilege.

Wont it still be under FCBoE?

What new schools? The schools in PTC are already built. Look, I do not portend to have all the answers. However, I do know that what we have now is broken and if we continue down the same path the "Education Fairy" is not going to somehow make our schools better. What has the FCBOE done? Again, we are, and have been, one of the worst school systems in the Country. Being the best Schoold District in Georgia is not saying much.

How does it feel to be so wrong? Don't you wish you'd waited until you knew what you were talking about to write a letter to the paper?
I think it was Abraham Lincoln who said, "It is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

There is not a separate school system for PTC. Never has been. Your kids go to Fayette County schools regardless of what city you live in. And let's not forget that many PTC residents go to Rising Starr, Starrs Mill, and Peeples, all technically in FAYETTEVILLE!!!

Mom to 3, plus the kids that hang out there all the time but don't live there (they like having an adult around that makes them feel welcome, and is just plain around!)
