School rezoning will affect property valuesTue, 10/17/2006 - 4:07pm

The Fayette County Board of Education wants to re-zone north PTC neighborhood schools from Booth Middle School to Flat Rock Middle School and McIntosh High School to Sandy Creek High School. North PTC homeowners pay PTC taxes and expect to send their children to PTC schools. However, the Fayette County Board of Education, in their infinite wisdom, have chosen that this is not the case. PTC residents should have their children bused to Tyrone/Fayette County Schools. I am trying to understand the thought process that drives us to this decision. I am a north PTC resident. Recently my taxes were increased on a new property value assessment. I did so willingly knowing my children would receive a good education in PTC schools. We considered it an investment in our children. What will happen to my property values now that I can no longer send my children to schools in PTC with the highest SAT scores? My child can no longer take a golf cart to school, but will add to the increasing/dangerous morning traffic headed north on Ga. Highway 74. Personally speaking, I down-sized and maintained my PTC residences giving up a larger home to ensure my children would reap the benefits of a PTC education. This right appears to be in jeopardy based on decisions made quickly and quietly by the Fayette County Board of Education. PTC citizens, act now. The Fayette County Board of Education, if what we know now is true, is acting in a nefarious way and it will not be tolerated by me and my neighbors. Even if you have no children in the school system, property values are impacted significantly based on the schools children attend. Remember Georgia is among the lowest ranked schools in the country and PTC schools are among the best in the state. Please communicate your frustration to the school board before it is too late.
