WHS student now out on house arrest in gun caseTue, 10/17/2006 - 3:36pm

A Fayette teen accused of bringing four firearms and more than 150 rounds of ammunition to Whitewater High School in August is out of jail but on house arrest, monitored by a GPS computer-locating system. Robin Kittrell, 17, can’t leave his parents’ home except for medical or psychological treatment and in either case must be accompanied by at least one of his parents, according to the bond order approved Friday by Fayette Superior Court Judge Johnnie Caldwell. Kittrell also is banned from going on the property of any school. Kittrell’s parents, Malcolm and Sharon, were required to post a $150,000 bond for the release of their son pending trial. They also had to agree to keep all weapons out of the home. Prior to the incident the family had several heirloom guns, and Kittrell and his father often practiced firing the weapons on a family shooting range, police said. Kittrell must continue “all necessary psychological or psychiatric treatment as indicated by a licensed clinician,” the bond states. Some of Kittrell’s friends have said the straight-A student had never been in trouble before. Police said the guns were found in Kittrell’s car in the parking lot after they were following up on a tip that Kittrell had brought a knife to school. Kittrell is charged with seven counts of possession of a weapon on school property and one count of possession of a concealed weapon. Kittrell, who participated on the Whitewater High School marching band, had attended band camp as the summer wrapped up just before the beginning of the school year. The anonymous tipster who provided the information about Kittrell having the knife was praised by law enforcement and school officials for coming forward with the information. Officials said that was the only way the school could have learned about the other weapons. In addition to the weapons, which were stowed inside a case, police also found a number of plastic flexcuffs, which are a disposable type of handcuff routinely used by police. Also found in Kittrell’s car were a large ninja-style sword, a belt with two speed-loading devices to quickly reload a revolver and a pair of binoculars. login to post comments |
