Steve Brown's football picks

Steve Brown’s Picks:

Fayette County @ Westlake
This is a good match. Fayette County has had some bumps in the road this year, so I pick WESTLAKE.

Landmark @ Fellowship Christian
LANDMARK CHRISTIAN all the way! This team has proven they have what it takes to win against some tough teams.

McIntosh vs. Woodward
I think that McIntosh’s woes will continue. WOODWARD ACADEMY takes it.

OLM vs. Mt. Pisgah
Last week, I finally got an Our Lady of Mercy pick right. I will go with MOUNT PISGAH.

Sandy Creek @ Carrollton
Sandy Creek got back on track last week and played some tough football. I think the momentum will carry them in what could be rainy conditions this weekend. Sic’em SANDY CREEK.

Starr's Mill vs. Whitewater
Here we go! I would easily call this one the Fayette County game of the week. I think that Starr’s Mill has been the most consistent team of the two. Whitewater is coming off a cake walk against McIntosh. It’s going to come down to who is more determined to win – It’s WHITEWATER.

UGA vs. Miss State
It appears that Stafford is the official quarterback for the Dawgs now. The lost to Vandy was awful and UGA fell off the top 25 list (not sure they should have been there anyway). Georgia is having trouble with first downs and scoring inside the 20-yard line. Last week, I was certain UGA would beat perennial underdog Vanderbilt, but you just cannot make those assumptions this year. It’s sad when I find myself doubtful that the Dawgs can beat a 2-5 team. I’m praying for a freshman QB miracle – it’s GEORGIA.

GT @ Clemson
This is a great college football match-up. Georgia Tech has not choked! They are playing with confidence. Number 19 Tech has got to be able to stop James Davis (averaging over 100 yards per game) in the Clemson backfield. I think they are up to the task – it’s GEORGIA TECH.

Falcons vs. Steelers
The Falcons are unraveling at the seams. They had a depressing game against New York. The Falcons’ offensive line resembles a huge hunk of Swiss cheese. The good news is the Steelers are worse! I’m praying for a FALCON rebound.

Staff member picks:
Mike Boylan - Westlake, Landmark, Woodward, Mt. Pisgah, Carrollton, Whitewater, UGA, Clemson, Falcons

John Thompson - Westlake, Landmark, Woodward, Mt. Pisgah, Sandy Creek, Starr's Mill, UGA, Tech, Falcons

John Munford - Westlake, Landmark, Woodward. Mt. Pisgah, Sandy Creek, Whitewater, Miss. State, Tech, Steelers

8 ball - Westlake, Landmark, Woodward, Mt. Pisgah, Sandy Creek, Starr's Mill, UGA, Clemson, Falcons

WHS 15
Starrs Mill 14

Its official now, we are no longer the new cat in town; we are THE ONLY CAT IN TOWN!
After sweeping Starrs Mill 9th grade, JV and Varsity this week, the Wildcats are for real. We told you guys not to doubt us; this team has more heart than any one team I have seen. Props go out to Robbie Davis, he is the real deal!
Yeah, now we can make that last payment on the football bleachers we ordered for the playoffs.
Go Cats!

We didn't gloat and neither shouldyou. You were lucky to get the win and anyone there will tell you that but why must you gloat? I recall Starr's Mill going to the State Finals the year of their seniors - you won't even win your region. The Fayette County Kids are Cats, and good ones. The Starr's Mill Panthers are cats, and good ones. I think you need to answer all these questions about players you have out of district and if you continue to draw attention to yourself you are going to continue to have these issues brought up. The only cat in town not to post SAT scores was Whitewater. The only cat in town we beat this year was Whitewater. What's wrong with you Hammer? Show some class - be the top cat or the classy cat and leave the trash talk to your clayton county and apecial permission players. God knows we saw enough of that when we played you.

I love you man!

I was there. You will never escape the poor officiating of this game. Touchdowns and big plays called back for Starr's Mill on bogus calls will forever be in the minds of the players and spectators.

Nor will you ever live down the fact that a Clayton County resident that you have out of district threw the pass to score at the end of the game. You know him, Mr. Dixon, Number 5.

Maybe you should be the "only cat in clayton county" since you have such disdain for a team that literally beat you every way you could be beaten but lost on touchdowns being called back on bad calls. The stats will show it to be true.

Your final drive was your only drive of the game and it was perpetuated by bogus penalties.

The third quarter had two major drives by Starr's Mill that would have put the game well out of reach of you, two huge gains, first downs and a touchdown all called back by penaties called by one single official. This one official called holding on interior lineman from the side corner position (the back judge)- the neither line judge never called it. He called it again on "the right tackle number 72 (same back judge) but there is no right tackle number 72". Again, the line judge and the head linesman never called it and questioned him to see what he was calling.

Also, your disdain for your other county school is evident. maybe now you can see why the rest of the county dislikes your school and your arrogant ways. While I am thankfull that your sniper was not there, I wonder if you didn't have your own snipers of sorts stratigically located. Was the official in question related to one of your 5 special permission players??

I was there - I saw it. I truly wish I had travelled to Carrollton to watch my Pats - you know - the ones that kicked your butt. When we played you we suffered through the same poor sportsmanship that Starr's Mill did last night. The only difference is - we beat you and score board showed it. Tonight, you were beaten and the score board doesn't reflect it.

Before you brag about being the only anything in town (Like the "copyCATS" that just got a new bell like Starr's Mill, get rid of your clayton county players, like Dixon and your 5 'special permission' players. Let the Brooks kids play and stop recruiting.

I'm just glad we kicked the crap out of you rednecks.

GO PATS!

Submitted by people4u on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 4:34pm.

You guys have spent the season not giving WHS a chance, we have earned every victory. Your sorry excuses of officiating and out of county players are getting old, I know where these kids live and they all live in Fayette County. Put up or shut up, turn in the Clayton county addressees that you are so aware of, let the FCBOE handle it.

The Pats did not knick our butts, it was 17-14 and we threw an interception to seal your victory, on what I thought was a very good game in which I complemented you guys.

Learn from Old School and show some class. People from all over the county have wanted to attend WHS since day one because of the success of all our student athletes; you need to get over it.

"Tonight, you were beaten and the score board doesn't reflect it"
Wrong, the scoreboard showed 15-14 visitors, we won.

“While I am thankful that your sniper was not there, I wonder if you didn't have your own snipers of sorts strategically located. Was the official in question related to one of your 5 special permission players??”
Very childlike comment, you must have issues.

Submitted by GloriaG on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 5:30pm.

Why is it continuously the theme at Whitewater HS about "special
permission students"? I would like to know the true
out of district numbers. (Guess this goes along with the "extras" at WHS provided courtesy of the ex-LTC. WHS is "SPECIAL"). BOE needs to get a grip on reality and realize you can't move kids from Whitewater district so the out of district kids can be accomodated at that school. Give us the numbers.

Submitted by wocdam on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 3:30pm.

When I heard the score of this game, I thought "Wow, Fayette County schools must have some talented players - I'll bet that was a great game!" Too bad you can't be proud of those kids - ALL of those kids. Ugly comments about "snipers" and "I'm just glad we kicked the crap out of you rednecks" is unnecessary. No wonder there is so much hate in this county these days . . . lighten up, it's just a GAME!!!!

Submitted by aztec1 on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 3:50pm.

Careful RightOnTheMoney, talk about snipers and schools in the same sentence and your obvious anger directed towards another school in this county is not cool in this day and age post-Columbine, ...maybe The Citizen webmaster needs to disable your account and pass your email addresss off to the cops so they can have a sit down with you...as 1Hammer says...YOU REALLY HAVE ISSUES!

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Sat, 10/21/2006 - 5:26pm.

Please don't put me in this position. RightOn is no doubt referring to the student arrested with the rifles at WWHS. Calling for his head is a bit of an over-reaction.

Regardless, all of us should be proud of the kids in this county.

I remember when Sandy Creek was opened and McIntosh was devistated football player wise, so was Fayette. I remember when Starr's MIll was opened and took McIntosh's players yet again, and some from Fayette. I remeber when Whitewater was opened and yet again took players from Fayette and Starr's Mill. The only reason they are 'Wildcats' and not Tigers, or Panthers is because we keep adding schools. They were tigers, then Cheifs, then Patriots, then Panthers, then Wildcats, and another is comming. Cat or otherwise they will be 'ours' too. (That is why the question of out of district kids needs to be answered by the way.)

Maybe south Georgia has it right by building schools three times our size with 1/3 of the divisions....naw, we outscore all of them in the only area that REALLY matters - academics. We chose smaller schools and we pay for it both financially and through athletics.

You can't tell me that you don't feel a little home town pride watching Calvin Johnson be he a 'Patriot' or not.

As far as 'disabling and account' for the remark thast RightOn thinks they were 'snipped at' by an official.... that would be ridiculous.

We can all be proud to be from Tyrone, Brooks, Starr's Mill, Fayetteville, PTC and the entire area. Enjoy it while you can and respect each other - that's the OldSchool way.

Our internet service at home was down until this morning.

It was the best high school game I have ever seen - just past Creekside/Sandy Creek for the region championship two years ago.

Whitewater 15; Starr's Mill 14

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 7:15pm.

I hate to blow your weekend but here are the results:

Fayete County is going to beat Westlake by 3
Landmark wins big (15)
McIntosh Wins a nail biter - barely
OLM has a devine game and wins by 2
The Pats and back and getting healthy - they win by 6
Starr's Mill beats Whitewater by double digits(Sorry Hammer)
Munford has lost his mind - UGA wins by 8
Tech is the real deal . Tech by 11

I hate to take all the fun out of it but there it is. Why even play now?

Submitted by Jones on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 6:56pm.

Hey, I'm taking the Mill over the Water. Whitewater proved they could stumble this season (eg. Sandy Creek and Banneker). I'll agree with Steve Brown that Starr's Mill has been the most consistent team. Can't figure out why he didn't pick them.

I'm betting on Clemson and the Steelers in the other games.

Submitted by PTCMomma on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 11:14am.

Somehow I doubt that any school official will look in to this as it would ruin their game. I agree, the spot on the team, no matter how good a player is, must go to someone who lives in the district!!!

Mom to 3, plus the kids that hang out there all the time but don't live there (they like having an adult around that makes them feel welcome, and is just plain around!)

John Thompson has it right on the Starr's Mill game. Whitewater has a tough time against good competition. They barely got by Westlake.

It will be Starr's Mill by at least seven.

How can Munford pick Mississippi State? That's crazy!

All of my Whitewater friends are confidently making plans for the playoffs to be at home. One told me that the administration is bleacher shopping for the playoff crowd they expect as they host (which would mean beating Starr's Mill). They really are confident and bragging about being the 'Only real Cat in Town" and have for the last three years. You have got to remember that Whitewater does in fact have a running back (from Clayton County) who leads them in rushing and is pretty darn good. They also have about 45 seniors on the roster this year. Since they have played together for four years, I have to give them the 'first look' edge; however, on the other hand, Starr's Mill can do more with less than anywhere I have ever seen and they have a few studs this year. I know that Starr's Mill starts several underclassman and at least one sophomore. Coach Earwood at 'The Mill' is as good a coach as we have seen in these parts and that helps "The Mill". Starr's Mill is battle tested and has lost only two games, one by the worst officiating known to mankind (if only half of what I have heard is true)despite having at least two starters injured in every game. I heard they got the two 1000 yard running backs back this week after four weeks of injuries. If Starr's Mill Defense plays well it is a done deal. I think Styarr's Mill will be ready to play and will get after it. I'll go with Starr's Mill to win by 10.

If you have to import players from another county to
claim "only real cat in town" you need to put an asterisk
by that statement with a disclaimer. If my kids played there
I would be offended to have someone from another county taking
a spot that truly belonged to an in-county player. What's the
true story on this from someone who knows please? GO PANTHERS!
(Just because you guys don't run your mouths about how much better
you are than other teams)

Submitted by people4u on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 1:18pm.

You folks are being ridiculous!
If you know an out of county players is playing for any school for that matter, just drop a name over at the FCBOE, I’m sure they will be more than glad to check it out. What happened with the arrests for stealing and drinking from a few of the SM starters earlier this year? Swept up under the carpet?
It is hard not to brag about WHS football; after all, all the “experts” said we would not be a factor in the region. 3-1 as of today.
If you are intelligent enough to analyze football, you will see that WHS has the speed, the talent and the heart to defeat SM, I have seen them both play over the years.
We were not supposed to win against Westlake or Banneker, and we did. Barely got by Westlake? Obviously, none of you all were there to appreciate the good game it was, just as good as our loss against Sandy Creek.
I can see you are very concerned and rightly so!

Submitted by RightOnTheMoney on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 1:40pm.

You know who you have that is out of district - he is your leading rusher - don't play coy. As for the Starr's Mill kids that drank over the summer - they were suspended for two games, cannot letter and could not start in their dome game, I got that info from the county office. When they beat Sandy Creek, they didn't play against us so I know they mised at least our game (and still beat us). Now, you tell us what happened to the Whitewater kids that were all arrested for fighting last year against the Sandy Creek kids - you know, the ones in the culdesac with the baseball bats. Oh, I remember - they all started that same week because, because (like the Starr's Mill kids you are so worried about) it was OFF campus! Starr's Mill was off campus, out of season, and during the summer and they still were disciplined. And you think we are ridiculous?

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Wed, 10/18/2006 - 5:05pm.

I went through this earlier this year about the Whitewater bunch before the Sandy Creek game with Hammer. What you are saying is correct. Sounds like you are a Sandy Creek fan too. Go Pats Smiling

Old School, how are you brother? Good to see your postings. I always read them all over the site; you are the voice of reason in this insanity! I have been away for a while, good luck to you guys on Friday and the rest of the season.

Thanks Hammer. I'll tell you what - we have run in to a couple of hard weeks. Maybe things will get better for us. This is a big week for you guys. Several of the writers are picking Whitewater over "The Mill". Should be a good game! Looks like you 'cats' are playoff bound!
