Westmoreland knows history...

Congressman Westmoreland knows exactly what he is talking about. Instead of calling him names, perhaps you should spend a little more time researching the topic. Even Democrat Joe Biden had this one figured out. I quote from the Congressional Record:

Many of the tools the Act provides to law enforcement to fight terrorism have been used for decades to fight organized crime and drug dealers, and have been reviewed and approved by the courts. As Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) explained during the floor debate about the Act, "the FBI could get a wiretap to investigate the mafia, but they could not get one to investigate terrorists. To put it bluntly, that was crazy! What's good for the mob should be good for terrorists." (Cong. Rec., 10/25/01)

thanks for that clarifying post re Lynn Westmoreland's comments about the Patriot Act. I read an 18 page summary of the act and it specifically prohibits it's use in any manner to infringe upon or circumvent any constitutional or statutory right of any American citizen. Those who screech about the Patriot Act are ultra-left wingers who really don't love America.

If you've spent much time reading these blogs attacking Lynn you've probably noticed that they all are talking through their hat and don't bother to gather facts or truth.

I recently challenged these hate-mongering liberals to cite one piece of legislation successfully offered and passed by a first term congressman and to this date there has been none. So much for their understanding of how things work at the federal level.

”specifically prohibits it's use in any manner to infringe upon or circumvent any constitutional or statutory right of any American citizen.”

Well tonto, you almost got it right.

Now go and read the “signing statement” that was attached to the bill.

The executive branch, according to the Bush administration, can and will, circumvent any and all parts of the Patriot Act that they see fit.

That includes the part about ”specifically prohibits it's use in any manner to infringe upon or circumvent any constitutional or statutory right of any American citizen.”

Does domestic "wire tapping" sound familiar?

Americans may be held as 'enemy combatants,' appeals court rules

Please pay special attention to the part that states, ” The events of September 11th have left their indelible mark," the court said in explaining its decision to defer to executive authority.”

The previous signing statement gave the executive branch this authority.

You miss the whole truth. One of the most magnificant things that could possibly happen would be to limit congressmen and senators to one term. That way the lobbyists couldn't get to them in time. We would only need to stagger the elections to avoid all new every cycle. The original intent was for plain citizens to serve and then go home. Avoids too many crooks. I don't know how such a system would affect all the "pork." I really don't think you understand how things should work; seniority should have nothing to do with government.

you're the one missing the truth. Let's stick to the real world and not the fantasy world of how things ought to be.

A two year term would be a total waste, pandemonium would be the rule.
I agree there should be term limits, 2 of 6 years each for the Senate and 3 of 4 years each for the House.

I have no problem with lobbyist doing their thing, but we must keep an eye on the elected reps/sens and make sure they toe the line.
