Last Night in Newnan

I just don't get it. Stage a ballgame or musical concert and you can sell out a stadium. People who can't get tickets will show up just to party in the parking lot. But have an admission-free debate in a school auditorium between contenders for a seat in the United States Congress, where decisions are made that affect every aspect of our lives and the well-being of our country, and you have empty seats. Sometimes I think the apathetic public gets exactly the government that it deserves.
Other than that, I enjoyed the debate in Newnan last night. McGraw was aggressive, as a challenger should be. At times, I felt that he was pulling his punches just a little, but that is probably wise. The public is tired of snarling partisan pit bulls.
Lynn Westmoreland, to his credit, left his Knucklehead Persona at home. He actually made a good showing in the Articulation and Composure Department. However, the substance and logic of his arguments were... the same old snake oil.
I'm a biased McGraw supporter. What did you all think?

I appreciate him running and understand why competition of some kind is always good and all. That being said, he's wasting him time.

If he has been wasting his time, so have I and a lot of other people who are trying to bring some accountability to our government. You know what? Even if Westmoreland were to get re-elected (and he won't), he will know that not everyone in the district thinks that what he has been doing is just hunky-dory with all of us. So it won't COMPLETELY be wasted time after all.

The 1st Rule of Propaganda is if you say it often enough, eventually, it will be true. I suspect Westmoron's henchmen would have you believe that you are spitting into the wind by voting for McGraw. They figure if they continuously tell you you're backing a horse with insurmountable odds against him, you'll believe it and stop working. (Kind of like repeatedly telling a kid he's dumb . . . eventually the kid'll start telling himself that he is dumb.) Yeah, nice try.

They're counting on you ignoring the fact that McGraw was a Republican who switched to be a conservative Democrat in order to do the business of the people of this district (rather than being a Westmoron-style corporate prostitute).

Make no mistake about it; McGraw has already won (we've just got to pack to polls to make it official Eye-wink). McGraw's made the do-nothingest member of the House have to do something . . . defend his sorry-*** record. It ain't much of a defense, in my view. How do you legitimately defend voting for torture? How do you tell the people you represent -- and who pay your salary -- that you voted to allow more-toxic waste to be placed in their neighborhoods? (And we won't even get into what a national embarrassment he was to this district on the Voting Rights Act renewal legislation.)

Aaaand, by the way, congrats to Cal and company. Westmoron's response that McGraw “read[s] the Fayette Citizen too much” shows you that the blogs are something Westmoron's got to be worried about . . . and reading faithfully.

So, in the spirit of neighborliness . . . Hi, Lynn. Start calling around to reserve your U-Haul truck for December. I hear the post-election rush in DC can be brutal for the "un-elected."

If I say it enough maybe my dreams will come true

McGraw will win
McGraw will win
McGraw will win...

Not that he deserves to, but reality is Westmoreland and all other Republicans here and elsewhere (in the real part of America) will prevail. Take it to the bank.

I assume you are a die hard republican who will vote republican no matter how bad he is. Smiling

HCG,

I understand and agree with your sense of frustration. I would have been there but I didn't find out about the debate until the day before; by that point, I was already obligated to be in other places. (Side note: I have to wonder if the lack of publicity was purposeful -- fewer witnesses means less exposure to direct criticism.) Then again, I have heard McGraw speak about the issues that matter to me and, frankly, there is Nothing Westmoron could have said to make me vote for him. (I'll gladly help him pack up and vacate his congressional office on December 31st. I'll even volunteer to drive the U-Haul back to Georgia for him.)

I appreciate the report, though.
