Newsboy weighs in ...... reluctantly. But here goes anyway: -- These are middle schoolers, doing what 11, 12 and 13 year olds do just as they always have (you, me, everybody included!) Puberty, insecurity, fear, hormones, awkwardness of size-12 feet on a 4-foot frame. They bully, fight, tease, act horrible ... test the limits, challenge authority, act tough while inside they're scared little kids still. At home their angels, at school their devils. God willing, by the time the reach high school, they've grown up enough to respect themselves and others enough to get on with life. And maybe learned a little algebra, too. (Do these problems exist at Sandy Creek High? Hmmm ... ) -- Wether the shirts themselves are offensive or inflammatory, wearing of them by this small group of students was (as stated in the news story) planned and intended to get a reaction. So why so surprised? Given that, the action taken by the school administration is appropriate. -- Dixie Outfitters as a company/organization is clearly about promoting Southern heritage and confederate history, as much as any African-American group does the opposite. But two wrongs never make a right. -- I'm white, and "Real Men Are Black" doesn't offend me ... instead, I'm thinking it might be able teaching young black males to take responsibility and show self-respect? -- Not one person posting on this site has ever had to pick cotton just to survive another day, so quit trying to claim that rationale, please. -- The confederate battle flag, just like the Nazi swastika emblem, wasn't created out of hate, but it was at some point in history embraced by those who promote hate (KKK, white supremacy movement, etc.) The ones you should be fighting are those among you who stole and corrupted your precious symbols ... to use for their own hateful causes. Take 'em back! Don't blame those who've been tormented by them. MORE LATER ... MAYBE ... Newsboy's blog | login to post comments |
