FRMS Parents Unite!

parent's picture

I challenge each parent in Fayette County to let your voices be heard! Send letters to the Board of Education. Demand to know why they've let a GA School of Excellence fall to such a low level. How can the administration of this school allow something such as a t-shirt to escalate racial tension to the extent that cops wearing SWAT shirtsare brought in to stand guard in the halls? The students were terrified to see SWAT walking up and down their halls. I would be scared if it happened in my building!! If the administration hasn't been trained to handle such events in a more professional manner, why are they allowed in leadership roles in our schools? The assitant principles in this school have been trained or scared into turning their heads when it comes to racial controversy. You walk in this school any day of the week and you will find 7 out of 10 in ISS to be white kids that have been pushed to limits by black kids. Let the whites complain about something the blacks have done, and its shoved under the rug until the situation escalates to the point the white kid can't take it any more. AND who gets discipline - the white kids!!! The blacks are still out among the student population stirring up trouble!
We can thank our wonderful Mr. Minter, the assistant principle in charge of school discipline for this. Get rid of him and you get rid of the problem...
Express our opinions to the Board of Education, don't let this become the norm for our county.

The more things change the more they return to the same place.

Remember, about 10 years ago, then FRMS Principal Juliette Babb, was excoriated for creating an air of racial disharmony. Black students and parents were outraged and she was eventually removed.

Fast forward and today angry white parents are calling for the ouster of Otha Mann.

Just like the carousel the elements remain the same: angry parents, upset students, “evil” school administrators, and an unresponsive Board of Education. The music stays the same as the carousel keeps going round and round.

Submitted by skyspy on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:12am.

It stays the same because the good people won't stand up and fight.

Evil people win when the good people do nothing.

This situation demands legal action.

Come on all you ambulance chasers, there is a lot of money to be made, and you could set a new precedent.

There have been legitimate complaints made here. Has anyone heard if the BOE is responding? Complaints of discrimination by the administration against students are very serious and I'm wondering why this isn't being agressively adressed to calm parents fears. I am not a happy parent and to be sending my child into this environment every morning is very worrisome.

Submitted by zeroace111 on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 6:23pm.

Responce is slow but there is something being done.

Submitted by skyspy on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:06pm.

This is a case of discrimination. There are lawyers that specialize in this type of crime.
You have 45 days from the incident to file a formal complaint. Every kid who witnessed any and all of this needs to write down everyhting they heard and saw. Most importantly they need to document which school official they made the complaint to and how it was handled(or in this case not handled).

Sounds like the administration at this school needs to go, in order for EVERYONE to feel safe.

It amazes me that after all of the school violence we have had in this country because of bullying it is still being tolerated in this school district. Apparently at this school it is also encouraged.

He as taken several reverse discrimation cases in Atlanta and won! The thing that is bad here is that the white kids are being taught to take it. What a joke! If this was a black kid they would have already got a million plus settlement out of court. They will not do anything at Flatt Rock till some white kid gets killed! You heard old school...Mann is Oliver's relative and God knows who else related is on the payroll. They are all gonna cover for each other. Mean while, all the kids from the other side of Fayette are shipped to FRM and SC with the FCBOC blessing. That means they won't go to McIntosh, Whitewater or the rest. To add insult to injury, every time a white leaves, a Black from somehwere else in the county can transfer in with the FBOC blessing cause it is one less for them to deal with and then it is our problem, not theirs. They sit there very smugly in their all white schools.

Submitted by token_school on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:05pm.

Oh please! White kids were threatened with a gun and response is slow? I bet if the reverse was true, Jessie Jackson and all the cookes would be fighting for camera face in front of the school with the principal and FCBOE's blessings! Doesn't FCBOE even put up a front that they care about the white kids in Tyrone? I guess not!

Submitted by token_school on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:40pm.

If someone's kids are threatened, it is owed to that taxpayer to at least do something with the kids that did it. Is anyone saying they don't know who did it? You have to be kidding! Do as much for the white kids as you would the Blacks. I have never been a racist, and still am not, but this kind of behavior toward our kids seems like we have guttless wonders on the board. If this was done to a Black I would demand an answer, why not for a white? I have compasion for Blacks, why are the Blacks in charge not having it for our kids. If one of them died, Black or white, someone should be held accountable.

Submitted by token_school on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:53pm.

I was taught to do the right thing. I was taught Blacks were as good as whites and I am 60 years old. I came from a small southern town and my Daddy taught me they were just like us and to never ever treat them otherwise. The Lady that raised me was Black and I thought of her as my Mother. I do not understand the hatred here. If the person that raised me was alive, she would be real dissapointed and not approve of all this.
I can remember, one of my friends boyfriends told us one night what he and some more kids where doing and it was ugly. I asked why and he couldn't come up with a good answer, I went home n told my Daddy, who called his Daddy, who went out to see if anyone was hurt.
This kids Daddy was mortified. This was wrong, no one told us we had to correct this, except ourselves. I couldn't have slept or lived with myself. Why don't Blacks have the same feelings for our kids. I would never hurt, nor let my kid ever think, it was ok to hurt or intimidate someone else. I do not understand this at all. I don't understand the school board. I feel they are part of the wedge I see being driven between whites n blacks here. and you will all be sorry with the results. This is so wrong..two wrongs don't make a right.

Are there any lawyers on here? Does anyone know if the parents can sue the pricipal and school board members personally??

I hope they can, it looks like the only way this will change is when it becomes painfull for them.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 6:47pm.

It's called the office of civil rights.

Submitted by RT Tugger on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 10:54pm.

As far as I can tell, the BOE is ignoring the issues that are being discussed here. Reminds me of when my brother used to cover his ears and sing, "La, la, la-la, la, I can't hear you!" The BOE is fully supporting the principal and the way last week's incident was handled. Nothing is going to change unless parents and taxpayers call and e-mail the BOE (and elect new members at the next election). Despite all the talk amongst parents, I doubt if more than a handful have actually called any of the BOE member to express their concerns.

Submitted by spideymann on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 10:38pm.

Change the adminstration and do it quickly please....move them to the county office or something. If half of what is being said is true I have to say our children deserve better!!

Submitted by RT Tugger on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 10:22pm.

How do you know about the kids who are in ISS? I know that I, as a parent, couldn't just walk in the school and wander down to ISS to check it out. I'm just wondering how you get your information.

Submitted by zeroace111 on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 6:13pm.

We know personally there were 8 students in ISS for wearing Dixie Outfitter shirts. These are our sons friends and we know the parents of most of them.Yes it was true they were in ISS.

Maybe this is a parent volunteer or maybe a teacher there? Who knows, but it has the ring of truth to it.

Submitted by RT Tugger on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 9:52pm.

about whether the SWAT team was actually present at FRMS last week. Are you absolutely certain the SWAT team was there last week? My child heard about the SWAT team but never actually saw them. I've called the FCBOE twice to ask if the SWAT team was there. Both times I was told there were no SWAT team members present, only an extra sheriff's officer. Who's telling the truth here and who's not?

Submitted by frms student on Wed, 10/11/2006 - 5:59pm.

there were 3 S.W.A.T members walking around the school patrolling, with handcuffs and guns, okay? they didnt have the big black shields but they were in shirts with SWAT embroidered on their upper left corner of their shirts. just to clear up any confusion, and they were hanging out with Officer Rojas. mr mann wasnt there that day because he was in the hospital so i think they needed more help.

I was there, I saw them. They weren't dressed all in black like you might imagine, but they were there in t-shirts that had "S.W.A.T" embroidered on the upper right chest area of the shirts. They were blocking any and all parents from going beyond the office area. The students were terrified to see such walking the halls. Some kids were locking themselves in the bathrooms, calling their parents from cell phones to come and get them because they were terrified!! I was SCARED myself! And so was all of the people in the office, you could see it in their faces!!

Submitted by zeroace111 on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 6:20pm.

Absolutly there was SWAT at school. The reason for SWAT being at FRMS is, there was a gun threat also many kids were threatned as far as being beat up.As usual the Vise Pricipal is in denial.I confirmed the gun threat with FCBOE.

in my math class a black student said "shut up 'n word'". the black teacher heard it, turned around real fast. asked the kid what he said. the kid did not reply and the black teacher just shrugged it off. what would have happened if a white kid would've said it?

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 4:27pm.

The black people in my work place use that offensive language all of the time and it is shrugged off.

I know how you feel. They have a huge malcom x chip on their shoulders and expect everyone to have respect for them.

Unless you earn respect no one is going to give it to you. First you have to respect yourselves and not use the "N" word.

Why do you people insist on behaving like animals??? Because you know it is annoying and you like to be destructive???

This requires a huge reverse discrimanation lawsuit!! Once we win one of these it will be what is known as "case law," and the precedent will be set.

You people will have to come up with another excuse for your bad under achieving behaviour.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:09pm.

Please refrain from grouping everyone in one demographic together. When is the last time a black kid shot up a school? How many black serial killers are you aware of? Who goes postal, black guys? People have to be judged on their own merits. Most of my family and friends resent 'ghetto' blacks and 'wiggers' more than you do. How do you define all the white kids that act like they come from inner city ghetto's and blast music through your neighborhoods. Please, don't fall victim to racism. My children were spanked for using the language you attribute to those in your workplace. I don't know where you work but I'm glad I don't work there.

Submitted by skyspy on Tue, 10/10/2006 - 7:19pm.

You have no idea how bad it really is.
I wouldn't wish my work place on someone I hated.

ps: watch Atlanta news every night for gratuitous black on black violence.

Thanks for that interesting tidbit. I've been reading your comments for some time now, and I've developed a great deal of respect for you. You sound like you'd make a great principal or school board member. If Flat Rock ends up needing a new administrator, I vote for you! P.S. You're not related to any higher-ups in the school district, are you?

Guys, I'm flattered but I retired before most of the school board was dry behind the ears. I am way too old for all this. I just hate to see injustice and intollorance. I actually do have relatives in the system - kids and grandkids!

I didn't have a problem with Mr Mann. To me, he seemed nice, it just boils down to since you can't paddle the kids anymore, it is much harder to control them. When I was growing up, you better not get a whipping at school, and if you did, you never wanted your parents to know, cause you'd get another when you got home.
I do feel this t-shirt thing got way out of hand.

Submitted by 1bighammer on Mon, 10/09/2006 - 10:31am.

it's Mr. Mann too. There is a real problem here, and the T-shirt thing just FINALLY brought some attention to it. Since Mr. Mann has been Prinicpal there, the racial tension has been escalating. I know from personal experience that anything negative about a black student, or in our case, a teacher, will be dismissed by him. In our particular case, a black female Language Arts teacher , who still teaches there, had multiple complaints from BLACK and WHITE parents on many different occasions and each time we were dismissed, and told that our students were exaggerating in their accounts of what happenned in her classroom. The problem was her obvious bias towards some children in her classroom. Mr. Mann didn't want to hear what teh students or the parents had to say. So you need to start from the top and work down.

When you ask the FRMS parents to unite, don't just ask the whites to join you. This shouldn't be just a white front going to the board of education, it should be a PARENT front. All the studnets are affected not just the whites.

Your right, 1bighammer, the school has been steadily on a down hill spiral since Oatha Mann became principle. Do you think its because he caters to the black trouble makers? ABSOLUTELY! And each of our kids, black or white, are being robbed of a decent education because of it. I've witnessed some of the same treatment you describe in your blog. I requested a team transfer of my daughter at the beginning of the year because of the trouble makers on her team. The request was denied. Today it is the very same students causing the disruption of the learning process that I wanted to get my daughter away from. Where are these disruptive students? In class causing more trouble!! While my daughter and everyone elses child is accused of being at fault when they address the situation to the principle.
