PTC biker dies after crash with golf cart

A Peachtree City man whose bike crashed into a golf cart Friday afternoon has died, police said.

James V. Earle, 64, had suffered a critical head injury during the crash and was flown to Atlanta Medical Center. He was wearing a bike helmet at the time, but it cracked during the collision, police said.

Earle was leaving the golf cart bridge spanning Ga. Highway 74 in the Aberdeen Village area when his bike collided with a golf cart driven by Karen Yorkshaitis, 65, of Peachtree City, police said. Earle was riding downhill at the time, making it possible that neither Earle nor Yorkshaitis saw each other coming, police indicated.

The police department’s Collision Reconstruction Team will conduct a comprehensive reconstruction of the crash, police said.

This is believed to be only the second-ever golf cart path related fatality in the city’s history. Last September Debra Oberholt, 36, of Tyrone died after she fell off a golf cart while it was turning.

Many parents are pushing for younger drivers to be able to operate golf carts. Several paths are being built (added) that go in to the County and cross busy roads. I was told that angry parents made Sam Sweat at Starr's Mold High School build cart paths (in Fayette County) so that they (County - not Peachtree City - residents in nearby neighborhoods) can drive golf carts through the school and acroos the road at Redwine and through the parking lot where students, parents, and teachers drive and park cars. Believe it or not, they have already added the golf cart paths at the school(s) and have now connected three additional Fayette County neighborhoods to the school, through the school(s) and therefore to Peachtree City. So now, you have even more Fayette County residents and cart traffic connected to PTC paths thanks to the school board and Sam Sweat. More traffic, faster carts, and co-mingling of carts and cars on school campus, more crossing at Redwine road and more accidents and less school security - good thinking DeCotis. One of my gradaughter's teachers said that the carts go through Starr's Mill school and down the sidewalks at all times of night and day - dumping trash and narrowly missing people and cars. Looks like the Board of Education, John DeCotis and Mr. Sweat has made our problems worse. I guess the next school shooter will be on a golf cart from Brooks courtesy of the Fayette County Board of Education.

Hopefully Karen Yorkshaitis will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law after the accident reconstruction team completes its investigation. Its a sad day in PTC.

Multi-Use Path? Scooters okay too? How about motorcycles under 100cc? Maybe gas and electric scooters, bikes and golf carts. Maybe Gators, Mules, and gas carts only? Gee, maybe you need some rules regarding your path usage. Jogging, walking, gas carts, golf carts, bicycles, and you are surprised that you have your second fatality in a year? get used to it if you don't change something. Ask any doctor in town how many 'golf cart' accidents they see. Yea, let's sentence the golf cart rider on the golf cart path for killing a bicycle rider - life without parole okay with you?

What you are going to get is a meeting where some stupid new rules will be issued and people assigned and then after a month, it will be forgotten about and never enforced. We have hired, probably, twenty-five, cops in the last twenty years strictly for the paths, and none of them are there often. No common sense is used when they are assigned, since they are ticked at the duty, so it is soon stopped.

I think that if she was speeding around a corner then, yes, she needs criminal prosecution. But we also have to have sympathy for her. It WAS and accident.

That said, a lot of you are blaming trees and bushes for accidents. Do you realize how silly that sounds?

Try this: Slow down twenty or thirty yards before a turn. Treat it like a four-way stop. Creep to the turn, look carefully both ways, and then procede. It isn't rocket science. It's called defensive driving. Another name for it is: smart driving.

I never speed around corners. Never. But I have yet to see a teenager who drives slowly around corners or when approaching head-on, and that includes most adults.

When rounding corners, go under five mph. When approaching head-on, go under 5 mph.

It's simple, and it works.

End-of discussion.

The site of the accident has the outline of the deceased on the side of the road where golf carts should be driving. The cross that has been placed in remembrance of Mr. Earle has also been placed on the side where golf carts should be. Mrs. Yorkshaitis' golf cart is not one of those newer models which run maybe 20 to 25 mph, but rather the normal 16 or 18 mph. If she was going uphill, the golf cart should have been laboring, so she could not have been speeding. THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT. THEY DID NO SEE EACH OTHER, AND THEREFORE TRIED THEIR BEST TO AVOID THE COLLISION. What is going to happen at the end is that even the manufacturer of Mr. Earle's helmet will be sued, since the helmet cracked opened. This is the way society is - we always need someone to blame. We can speak all we want about bushes, trees, speeding golf carts, negligence, etc, but the bottom line is that God already had that date picked out to receive Mr. Earle in His Kingdom. His Will shall always be done regardless of the circumstances.

Unfortunately, the people who drive golf carts too fast and reckless are not the ones, in my opinion, who read these web comments, nor even read newspapers. We are preaching to the choir only, usually. If you really think just because you know how to approach a dangerous intersection and that fact would influence them, even if they read this stuff, you would be wrong. I do agree that cutting some bushes wouldn't help much. I have met some of these people on the straightaway who won't even cut off the path slightly to safely pass you, as I do. They are willing to head-on you unless you get off! Either that, or they have no common sense or knowledge of distance. The tunnel at the Glass gazebo is blind, but some hit that tunnel at full gallop, on both sides. That is ignorance, and is hard to cure without a traffic ticket. We aren't likely to get any traffic tickets issued here on the paths. Are we? Why do we allow fast carts? Why do we allow reckless bicycle riding? Not a priority for more than five minutes.

whtfayette, I think you need to take a reading comprehension class.

The article says, “A Peachtree City man whose bike crashed into a golf cart Friday afternoon has died, police said.”

It does not say that he was hit by the golf cart but rather crashed into a golfcart.

Additionally, it was stated in previous versions of this article that it was most likely that neither could see the other because of the overgrown vegetation.

Your accusation that Karen Yorkshaitis was at fault is unfounded.

If anything, you owe Karen Yorkshaitis an apology.

whtfayette, whoever you are. Those words were uncalled for. Have you been to the scene of the accident? There is no way that Mrs. Yorshaitis nor Mr. Earle could have avoided each other. Yes, Mr. Earle lost his life, and hopefully is living his new one as promised by the Lord he so served in his church. Mrs. Yorkshaitis is alive, but her life will never be the same. She will have to live with the fact that due to a very unfortunate event she took a life. But the Lord that she knows and also serves at her church will take care of healing her, and hopefully she will move on. You must be someone very perfect, never making a mistake or causing any kind of accident so that you can be so quick to judge. With that type of thinking it is the Lord I hope you serve that will prosecute you to the fullest extent of His law. It is even a sadder day in PTC just to know that we have people like you who run to conclusion and wish people only the worst.

What exactly have you determined she is going to be prosecuted for? It seems to me after all I have read it was a terrible accident.

I did not know you – except through blogs.

All I know was that you loved dogs.

My connection to you was through west to east coast calls.

And then, that you died late last night.

Also, the fact my family was involved.

I will never forget your name.

If you are referring to the intersection at the end of the bridge heading away from Centennial and towards Aberdeen that is a dangerous intersection. There is no line of sight and it is a very sharp turn in any direction. My husband broke his collar bone there a few years back in a bicycle related accident. Maybe someone should look into trimming back some of the shrubbery that lines that area or even posting a sign that warns of the upcoming intersection. People should slow down whether on a bicycle or driving a cart. We are fortunate that we haven't had a lot of these types of accidents. Mr. Earle is in our thoughts.

For sure this is an unfortunate accident and we are praying for the Earle family.

There is an issue mentioned in the news account that is worth mentioning, especially since it has bothered me for years. That is:

"Maybe someone should look into trimming back some of the shrubbery that lines that area or even posting a sign that warns of the upcoming intersection"

Well sure, someone should do the trimming - there and elsewhere, but someone should also look at what in the world these planners in PTC and many other places are thinking about when they require landscaping that will obviously grow and block the views of drivers - cars or golf carts.

To me this is a far more important issue than trimming. Specifically, don't require a builder or developer to plant something that will eventually grow and create a safety hazard. Is the planning commission or planning staff partially responsible for Mr. Earle's death? I hope not, but I don't know. Why give some poney-tailed money-grubbing lawyer an entry into our city's (self insured) liability fund?

The most obvious current example is along the Parkway when you are trying to make a left turn and are in the median and cannot see the oncoming traffic because of the shrubs and trees that are 8 feet tall.

To summarize, don't plant things for the sake of planting things. Consider the future impact of tour planting decisions on traffic safety. Please, before we all get sued.

Maybe.....just maybe we are all part of the problem... We all speed, we all tend to think we are the only ones out on the paths.....and they were built for us exclusively........right??

This is a tragedy.....and it is one that didn't have to happen. We are all responsible....yeah, maybe we could trim some shrubbery, maybe.... just maybe WE COULD ALL SLOW DOWN.

Maybe we could remeber to be thoughtful, and think about the fact that we aren't the only ones in the world.

Maybe the police could get out there and start to issue tickets to people who are speeding on the paths.

I am sure these two people had no idea their day would end this way. Given their ages, I doubt either one of them was speeding, or driving/riding recklessley. My point is even when no one is speeding, look at the tragedy that can occur. Even at a low rate of speed, someone lost their life.

Lets not let this lesson go to waste....lets learn from it and move on.

My condolences and prayers go to the Earle family.

Again our prayers are with the family.

Now, what about the rest of the cart path system?

There are several places where there are “blind” turns.

My all time favorite is the BIG ROCK on the southern tip of Village Park. It’s not a tree or shrubs that block you view, it’s a bolder that the kids have spray painted. There is no way to see around that thing.

Now that the city has hired someone to fix the path system this problem may be addressed.

I would like the city to take whatever action is necessary to correct as many of these blind turns as possible so that we never have to deal with something like this again.

The passing of Mr. Earle has affected many of us, regardless if we knew him or not. We should all ask ourselves "are we ready?" I bet you that when Mr. Earle and Mrs. YorKshaitis went out on that lovely afternoon on the golf cart path, neither remotely thought that their lives would change forever. I know it has been a wake up call for our family - making us more aware of where we are spiritually. Our Maker knows the day we will go to meet Him. I visited the sight were the accident took place and as far as I am concerned the accident could not have been avoided. It was no one's fault - it just happened. May God in His infinite mercy be with both families; bringing them healing and acceptance.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Earle's family and to Ms. Yorkshaitis. Such a tragic accident.
