Devout Braves fan, 96, finally attends first gameTue, 10/03/2006 - 3:49pm

Louise Phillips of Fayetteville has been more than content to watch the Atlanta Braves, her favorite baseball team, in the comfort of her own home, on her own couch, in the air conditioning. But family members prodded her to see a game in person, and following an invitation from the Braves that’s exactly what the 96-year-old woman did Wednesday night. The team pulled out a big win in what has been a disappointing season, and Phillips got to see the Braves hit three home runs in one inning. During the game, Phillips said it was certainly different than watching at home. “There’s a lot of distractions,” Phillips said. With each home run, for example, comes the blaring of music ... just as loud as it is between innings. That is, when fans aren’t being quizzed on the larger-than-life TV screen on the scoreboard. Phillips might have another reason to prefer staying at home. She can see her favorite Brave, Marcus Giles, better. Why is Giles her favorite? “He has a cute face,” Phillips said. Phillips is such a devout fan that when the game was on her TV, she would ignore phone calls, said her granddaughter Mary Julia Stephens. Family members were sent schedules so they’d know when not to call. There were no such problems at Turner Field Wednesday night, as several family members went with her to the game. The trip was a special treat, Phillips said, but the look of joy on her face with each home run belied that she’d be happy at The Ted or just as happy at home. After all, her boys won again. login to post comments |
