Completion date slated for Oct. 2008

Work on the widening of Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City — from Ga. Highway 54 to south of Crosstown Drive — may begin as early as Monday according to state transportation officials.

The road will be widened to six lanes, three in both directions, with sound buffering walls in a few select locations along residential areas close to the road, according to the project plans. The $18.4 million project will be conducted by C.W. Matthews company, which bought original bid winner APAC, according to DOT District 3 spokesperson Barry Hancock.

Now that right-of-way is in hand, the first step in the construction phase of the project is debris removal and clearing of the site, Hancock said.

The project is due to be completed by Oct. 3, 2008. The contract to build a second phase, which would pick up at the southern terminus of this project and extend all the way to Ga. Highway 85, will be let in December of next year. State transportation planners have already set aside $17 million for the second phase including right-of-way purchasing and construction costs.

Another $1.37 million will also be spent to build a new wider road bridge over Flat Creek as part of that project. Also included in the second phase is the realignment of Rockaway Road, a main commuter traffic artery in and out of fast-growing Senoia, so it will link up with the existing traffic light on Hwy. 74 at Holly Grove Road at one of the entrances to the Wilshire Pavilion shopping center.

There's a good reason why GDOT chose to widen Hwy. 74 to six lanes. Look at what is going on in Coweta, and look at what is happening to Hwy. 16.

I don't think it has to do with Coweta as much as all the industry on 74. Just look at how bad traffic is during shift changes.

I agree with SLUF. Where are the industries? Highway 74 south. How many residents of Peachtree City work at these Industries. Very few. If they do live in Peachtree, it is because the industries moved them here from another State. Peachtree City is still building industries, just look what is going on across from Panasonic. Why destroy the woods when their so many empty factory buildings on Dividend Drive? And what has Peachtree done about the traffic they are creating. Nothing, except red lights. The traffic that these industries will generate should be addressed before they build. Anyone agree?

The industrial base in Peachtree City doesn't require six lanes. Spear Guy does have a point.

Think about it, it's easier to convince a city or county government to accept a big project if you have the road capacity. Highway 16 is going to explode and now the growth will be justified with road capacity.

and will be very welcome. I live off of McIntosh Trail near the Amphitheater, and it's gets thick between 54 and Crosstown. It's been this way for the last 2-3 years. I would rather be proactive, than sit and wait. Will help the business's along this stretch too, for truck access etc.
