Steve Brown's picks

Fayette County (1-2) vs, Woodward Acad. (3-0)
Private school powerhouse WOODWARD ACADEMY will roll to victory. It is hard for Fayette County to compete with a school that recruits athletes.

McIntosh (0-3) @ Banneker (0-2)
McIntosh is hurting for size and BANNEKER will prove to be too strong and too quick.

OLM (0-2) vs. Towns County (0-1)
Every time I pick Our Lady of Mercy they lose. I will give them a break this time and pick TOWNS COUNTY.

Starr's Mill (2-1) @ Westlake (1-2)
Westlake has some quickness and Starr’s Mill had better be careful on defense and special teams. It’s STARR’S MILL!

Whitewater (2-1) @ Creekside (3-0)
Creekside’s Eric Berry is the number one college prospect in Georgia. Berry is also ranked as the nation’s best defensive back. One man cannot beat you by himself, but Berry comes darn close. I will give it to CREEKSIDE.

UGA (3-0) vs. Colorado (0-3)
Someone please shoot the ailing Buffalos! Colorado is weak in every facet of the game this season. A lot of us got our wish, and Dawg QB Stafford is doing well. Luck of the schedule gives Stafford another easy “practice” game. It’s the DAWGS, and look for a shutout from the defense.

GT (2-1) vs. Virginia (1-2)
The Jackets always scare me when they meet an ACC team. They have a bad habit of losing key games. Reggie Ball had 138 yards rushing against Troy last week. Praying that Ball avoids throwing costly interceptions, GEORGIA TECH takes it!

Falcons (2-0) @ New Orleans (2-0)
Wow, the Falcons and the Saints are both 2-0! Is this a sign of the end times? Falcons: Two games and 558 yards rushing. My earlier prediction on Mike Koenen dying from too much kicking duty has become reality. Thankfully, we did not need a three-point boot for a victory last week against the Buccaneers; with New Orleans, it might be a different story. The FALCONS defense will make the difference in the victory this week!

Staff picks
Mike B. (19-6)
Fayette County, Banneker, OLM, Starr’s Mill, Creekside, UGA, Virginia, Falcons

John T. (19-6)
Woodward, Banneker, Towns County, Starr’s Mill, Creekside, UGA, GT, Falcons

John M. (20-5)
Woodward, Banneker, OLM, Starr’s Mill, Creekside, UGA, GT, Falcons

8 Ball (14-11)
Fayette County - Sources say no, McIntosh - Outllok good, OLM - Sources say no, Starr’s Mill - Most likely, Whitewater - Very doubtful, UGA - Don’t count on it, GT - Most likely, Falcons - Without a doubt

I'm confused - I assume that this article indicates that former mayor Steve Brown is now an amateur football handicapper...

What qualifications does he have to do this????

Let's check his work...

Woodward beat Fayette County (close game on the scoreboard).
McIntosh should disband its football program, anybody can see they lost.
OLM won....I guess he "picked" that right...
WRONG on Starr's Mill
RIGHT on Creekside

I guess next week I'll expect to see Greg Dunn's preview of the upcoming NHL season.

I enjoy his football forecasts a lot better than the BS he blew as Mayor. Hey, he's a local citizen and has some "name recognition," so why not let him make some football picks each week? Sounds good to me. It doesn't mnatter if he talks out of his backside and doesn't have a clue....we already had to deal with that before with him:)

Steve is a real goof, but he gets people talking and creates a *buzz*.
Now, if you are going to your local bookie to bet on high school football games, you might want to seek a second opinion. Or psychiatric services.

Steve Brown, I love you like a brother, but Westlake is going to beat Starr's Mill. Starr's Mill is too beat up to win. Key players are out and the rest are walking around like whipped dogs.

Hang in there! My family voted for you and a lot more now wish they had.

What happened to the all-powerful Whitewater varsity football team? If appears that everyone is jumping off of their ship. I remember Whitewater fans telling us the winning streak would continue through the season. A Whitewater parent told me Steve Brown was crazy for picking Sandy Creek over their team. Not so crazy any more.

2-2 is not a good start to making a run at the region championship.

Envy? Jealous?
Are you writing WHS off after a 2-2 start? Obviously you are football challenged. As I have learned from my bud Old School, you certainly don’t write anyone off after four games, (unless they are 0-4!). Which team do you pull for? A little early in the season to be tooting your horn “Jonesy”
The WHS bandwagon is alive and well, why don’t you show up for a game and see it by yourself, on the road or at home, we always have more fans than our opponents, that’s a fact. We are not fair weather fans that throw stones at our school and coaches when things don’t go as planned, maybe you should take notes.

Dear Mr. Brown

Re: Steve Brown’s Picks 9/20/06

Woodward Academy may well defeat Fayette County Friday night, but it will not be due to “recruiting”. Woodward Academy draws students from the entire metro area but it does not, as you write, recruit athletes. There are no athletic scholarships or other considerations offered to attract student/athletes. All Varsity starters have been at Woodward since 9th grade and the majority of the have been Woodward students since at least 6th grade. Also, as you know, the 1.5 multiplier is still in effect. Fayette County with an enrollment of 2046 has about 800 more students. Assuming half are males, that is 400 more potential players to build a program with. If Woodward beats Fayette County it will be because Woodward Academy is the better football team—period!

Where did you get your enrollment for Fayette County HS? They have less than 1400 enrolled.

...still can't see the forest because of the trees.

Woodward "recruits" students that can
a) graduate from a very good college prep program that easily surpasses Fayette Co's.
b) can afford the tuition

There are no breaks on admission to go to Woodward, whether you're a superstar student or athlete. I think they no longer even give a discount for faculty/staff that have children enrolled.

So, how does Woodward "entice" anyone to attend besides the academic program and its value to the student? I can't think of any Woodward grads who have ever played in the NFL and very very few even play at the collegiate level. They don't give any financial incentives at all.
If you attend Woodward, it's for the academics, not the football program which hasn't been a "powerhouse" in many years in any event.

You bet, Woodward draws two kinds of students from all over the metro area: the rich and the athletically inclined. Are you trying to say, Mr. Murphy, that none of the big horses on the football and basketball teams are receiving subsidized tutions?

Woodward and Marist are famous for their athletic scouting programs.

Dear Mr. Murphy,
Woodward may well have the "better football team--period" as I am not familiar with the football teams' abilities in the area. I am though, VERY familiar with the topic of recruiting as Woodward Academy has tried to recruit my student athlete to their school for many years. I think with a little investigating, you will find that it happens quite often. My student/athlete just choose to stay in public school although I must admit, it was tempting to receive a great education from Woodward Academy.

Marcmurphy is right. I hear public shcools complain all the time about private schools recruiting athletes, but it rarely happens. I went to private school and most everyone was already attending since middle school. Good players were always developed, not recruited. Public schools always have the bigger numbers too. If they lose it might be because they didn't prepare hard enough during the summer.

Remember that dinosaur of GA politics, cronyism, corruption, crap-ism, etc? I never thought it would actually happen: voters throwing that ignorant redneck out of office, but it did. Murphy was the main catalyst of the "public schools can't compete against private schools" argument and ramrodded some BS legislation to re-classify schools. That opinion has been proven over and over to be just as stupid as other Murphy "opinions."

Wow, this is bringing back bad memories of Georgia politics. People like Murphy, Larry Walker, Bert Lance, Lester Maddox and Jimmy Carter. I think I'll go throw-up now.
