School lines to be redrawn by end of this year

In less than a month, Fayette County parents will get their first glimpse at the new attendance lines for all the county’s high schools and middle schools.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Sam Sweat told school board members Monday night the system has already received more than 100 e-mails about the new attendance lines. The new boundaries will be in place next August, when Bennett’s Mill Middle School on Lester Road in the center of the county opens as the county’s sixth middle school.

Sweat said several factors, including the capacity of each school, will be taken into consideration when the lines are drawn. Another major factor will be the efficient use of transportation, as fuel costs continue to add to the school system’s budget.

“We won’t be able to have a true feeder plan, since we’ll have six middle schools and five high schools,” he added.

Sweat said the school system will take public comment until Oct. 10, and then unveil the maps at the Oct. 16 board meeting. After the maps are released, more public input will be sought and the board could vote on the boundaries at its Nov. 21 meeting.

But school board member Janet Smola wondered if it wouldn’t be better to vote in December.

“I think a dialogue with the public is important,” she said.

Board chairman Terri Smith added the board had to reject all the elementary maps earlier this year because the board didn’t have time to redo them after the public comment.

But member Greg Powers said a December deadline could “be shooting us in the foot.”

“If they’re ready by November, we should go ahead and vote,” he said.

Smith also encouraged residents to try and keep emotion out of the debate and stick to facts.

Powers also asked Sweat to try and avoiding splitting enrollment at elementary schools and sending the students to two different middle schools.

Sweat said he would also make sure that each school had a copy of the maps, along with placing them on the school system’s Web site.

GO BACK AND SEARCH THE CITIZEN ARCHIVES from the period of time when Steve Brown was trying to get the West Village land annexed ... he kept pushing the extension of McDuff and the building of a RR overpass as go-ahead reasons for the BOE to build a school on land donated by JOhn Weiland. But Dr. Decotis was quoted on more than one occasion that a Centennial school is not part of their long-range plans and not enough students live or would live over there to ever warrant it. They don't want it. After seven years I believe the land reverts back to weiland.

Parents of Fayette County middle school and high school students, we're approximately 2 weeks away from the Fayette County Board of Education unvailing the redrawn maps at it's October 16th meeting. They're giving the parents (tax payers)of the county until October 10th to submit your feedback over thier website @ http://www.fcboe.org/

Do you want your kids moved out of thier current school? Do you want your home to depreciate in value if the school they choose for your children is considered "less desirable" than the one they are currntly in? ... are you bordering on any of the school lines?

You better get involved and be heard. Submit your comments this week!

With John Wieland asking for 700 additional homes on the westside area of Peachtree City, I'd suggest that elementary school parents not get too attached to their child's school.

Now that we have a toxic train parking lot next to Centennial, don't expect the elementary school to go there as was previously thought. It would be too much of a danger to the students.

Otherwise you're just speading rumors.

Land has been set aside, and I've seen NOTHING that says a school won't be built.

Has anyone heard rumors on which neighborhoods? I am concerned because both my boys are at the same HS.
