Fayette leads state in prosecuting out-of-county students

The Fayette County School System’s crackdown on illegal students is drawing state-wide attention.

“We are the only system that is prosecuting these cases,” said Superintendent of Education John DeCotis, during Monday night’s school board meeting.

Last week’s press conference announcing the arrest of two people for falsely swearing on residency affidavits indicated how serious the system is about the issue, said Assistant Superintendent of Operations Sam Sweat.

Sweat said the process started in late June when the system sent out letters to the 965 parents of students attending Fayette County Schools on affidavits.

“418 of those students were no-shows,” Sweat said.

Since school opened, an addition 591 students filled out affidavits, which brings the total to more than 1,100 students. Currently, the system is investigating the 275 affidavits at the high school level and is paying investigators $25 an hour to help with the process.

“We started at the high school level, because we believe that will lead us to siblings that may also be attending middle or elementary school,” Sweat said.

The system plans to have every affidavit investigated by Christmas and bring a report to the board.

Sweat also added that a day after the press conference, two families asked to change their addresses on the affidavit.

“We’re working with the D.A.’s office to determine how those cases should be handled,” he added.

Sweat thanked the efforts of District Attorney Scott Ballard and law enforcement agencies.

“We could not do this without their help.”

Will those who are convicted of falsifying the affidavit be required to pay restitution to the county for educating their child and taking away those fund which were meant for the legal students?

I certainly hope more arrests are made.

As a side note: When I was having my kitchen cabinets delivered back in July, one of the delivery "men" was a 17 yr old kid. He said that even though he lived in McDonough, his aunt (who lives in PTC) wants him to attend McIntosh. I informed this kid that it is illegal for him to be enrolled as a resident student in Fayette while living in McDonough. He just shrugged and said his aunt would vouch for him....stupid me, I can't remember his name.

Over the summer we had checked into enrolling one of my sons at McIntosh instead of Starr's Mill. My house is in Starr's Mill district, my ex-husband lives in the McIntosh district (but doesn't own the property). We have joint custody, so I figured it would be legal to enroll him at either school. I inquired about it with the FCBOE and Arlene Law gave me the total third degree. She was as rude as could be and basically accused me of trying to sneak my kid into a Fayette school, obviously ignoring that I told her I'd been a Fayette resident and property owner for 12 years. I was just weighing our options for what was best for my son at the time, and I ended up being treated like a criminal. She said there was a review of requests and affidavits and if we chose to "try it" we probably would be turned down.

I can't for the life of me understand how over 1100 students are enrolled under affidavits (some obviously illegally) if they all go through a review process before being admitted. If this 'review' process really works, why are our tax dollars being spent at the rate of $25 an hour to investigate questionable students?

What this is costing is irrelevant. If we make a statement now and protect our children and our schools (and, indirectly, our property values) we'll reduce the number of people outside Fayette County who are willing to try to steal from Fayette taxpayers. Prosecute every single one of these cases to the fullest extent and make a statement that we will not tolerate this.
