After the summer concert series at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater is over, some real heavy hitters will come to town.

The Southside Slugfest, an event featuring 15 mixed martial arts fights and an appearance from UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes, will take over “The Fred” on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Reaction to the event has either brought wild cheers from fans or sour notes on The Citizen’s Web site from people who wonder if this is an appropriate event for Peachtree City.

Event promoter and fighter on the card that night, Cory Nestlehutt, urges people to do a little research before judging the competitors or fans of ultimate fighting.

“It takes a lot of training to prepare for an event like this,” said Nestlehutt, a Palmetto resident who has had success putting on similar events in and on the north side of Atlanta. “These are athletes who are very disciplined and dedicated to the sport. Many of them are former military or law enforcement personnel and a number of fighters have also been collegiate and/or Olympic athletes.”

Nestlehutt always saw a large number of people from the south side of Atlanta attend the events he put on, so he started looking for places to present an event south of Atlanta. He expects a sell-out crowd on Oct. 21 and has received between 50 and 75 calls a day since word first leaked out about the fights.

There will be both amateur and professional fights on the card. Professional fights are three five-minute rounds and the athletes can use their elbows in the fight, while amateur fights are three four-minute rounds and the athletes are prohibited from using their elbows in the fights.

There will be a number of fighters from Georgia at the Southside Slugfest, but there will also be fighters from Kentucky, North Carolina and Texas in the ring.

Tickets, which went on sale on Friday, range in price from $25 for lawn and standing room only to $50 for floor seats within the first five rows. General admission tickets will be $30.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the fights will begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 770-631-0630 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.

In addition to the Southside Slugfest, the amphitheater will also present several other events in October. The Twilight Theatre will present “Oklahoma,” Oct. 6 and 7 and Oct. 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. Visit www.thetwilighttheatre.com for more information.

There will also be a free concert from the Bands of the United States Air Force Reserve on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Safe Trick or Treat Night with The Swingin’ Medallions on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. This event will also be free and will include trick or treating with all of the sponsors of the summer concert series.

For more information on any of these events, phone 770-631-0630 or visit www.amphitheater.org.

This wierd sort of thing is not quite as fakey as wrasslin, but these guys aren't going to put each other out of business. They are actors, make it look very good. Unfortunately, there are many of us who get huge thrills out of gladiator type cruelty. We could have a survivor type thing in our swamp below the amphitheater!
