Sandy Creek edges out Whitewater, 13-10

What many had thought would be a high scoring affair was instead a defensive battle filled with bursts of tremendous offensive plays for both sides.

After a scoreless first quarter, Whitewater kicker Jordan Cooper connected on a 35 yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. The Patriots answered within one minute when Joseph Snowden caught a pass from Jake Turing and ran 90 yards for the touchdown. Whitewater took the lead at the half as quarterback Jay Bright found Jerrod Richardson in the end zone with a 30 yard touchdown pass.

That was all the points Whitewater would muster though. The score remained 10-7 until early in the fourth quarter. Rashad Hollis rushed three yards for a touchdown after Tim Russell made a drive saving catch on 4th and 11. Sandy Creek missed the extra point but hung on during the Wildcats next two drives. The Patriots' Robert Jaracz intercepted a pass with just under three minutes remaining and Sandy Creek ran the clock out.

It was the first loss for Whitewater since the 2004 season. They will host Fayette County next week in their first region game of the season, while Sandy Creek travels to Franklin County.

First loss since 2004 season? Isn't that just a little misleading? Look who they have played since 2004 (and who they haven't). Why can't you just say, "In Whitewater's (AAAA) first game ever playing an in county team, they lost to Sandy Creek (a AAA school)" or how about "in Whitewater's fist ever region schedule season they are 1-1 in non-region play"? Why can't we give Sandy Creek the credit they deserve? They just beat a team with 42 seniors on their home field. I am proud to be a (biased) Patriot fan and really sick of all the hype about Whitewater's bogus record of being "undefeated". Maybe now the misled and misinformed will become a lille more enlightened and a little more humble. Way to go Pats!

Hey "old school", facts are facts, regardless of you think of the schedule. 14 wins in a row before the loss last night. I guess you can't win with class, I hate to see what happens when you lose your next game. What does the classification have to do with the athletic ability of the team? Were the WCats supposed to be superior because we are AAAA and you guys are AAA, give me a break! (Why do you bring this up anyway? If you stay in the upper class you couldn’t compete anyway, so you had to drop to the little leagues!!!) I still think we are the better team. The fact is that 5 turnovers did the Cats in, a 13-10 score against an “unproven” team is the best you guys can do??? I hate to see what happens when you play a “real” team.

You obviously have no respect for our team, but just ask the players if they are happen to get out of there with the win. I give SC kudos fro their performance; they were better last night and deserved to win. For those that can appreciate good football, this was a very good, hard nose battle. SC was big and fast, but WHS has something you can’t coach, big hearts! This is a talented team, OUR FIRST LOSS IN 14 GAMES., (it’s not bogus, it’s real) any way you put it.
You guys must be proud to have that tough schedule of yours:
Franklin County 0-2
Villa Rica 1-1
Cartersville, 1-1
Carroll Central 0-2
Haralson 0-2
Cedartown 0-2

The Blue Devils can beat these guys!
Go Wildcats, first REGION win next week against Fayette County, no doubt!

Have you ever heard the old saying "Don't count your chickens before they hatch"? We are talking about high school football and ANYTHING can happen! A tiger WIN can happen. For those of us who do appreciate good football; we will wait til the game is over and the score tells us who won/lost. Predicting your win by stating NO DOUBT was just dumb on your part and disrespectful to the tigers team. You talk about SC not having respect for your team...obviously you are the one lacking respect, by showing NO RESPECT for the tigers. Another old saying comes to mind..."you must show respect to get respect". This should be a great game to watch for both sides. Consider this: the kids aren't really rivals, as a matter of fact, some of them are very good friends: it's crazy parents like yourself who are the rivals!! Good luck to both teams.

Your right, good luck to both teams.

Well said my friend. As another school that been around a while we have always had good fun hard fought football games. Seems the new 'cat' on the block has a problem respecting anyone else right now. Best of luck Friday night. Despite the rough start, I have to beleive they Wildcats will learn to play well with others in their home county. I wish all of the Fayette County teams great success, like you said, it's high school football and ANYTHING can happen!

Submitted by fcbFAN1 on Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:37pm.

I'm glad you agree. Afterall, it is just friday night football for us fans. All of our fayette county teams have class, but we should keep in mind that WHS is new at this and it may take some time for them. We all enjoy rivarly within our county (no matter what sport) it is, and they are newbies, so let them live and learn! The parents that is.

I agree there is talent enough to go around, and lets not forget Sandy Creek did win 21 straight regular season games in the not too distant past. Has ANY in county school ever done as well???? (not all that sorry for the bias!!!!)

I have not forgotten the great job Coach Walker and it looks like Chip will kick it up another level. Your winning streak in the regular season is certainly to be commended. We just hope as WCats we get a taste of the playoffs as the Pats have; the seniors have worked so hard over the last four years.

Are you as proud of your team's GHSA violations?? You REALLY don't know why we have classifications by numbers in the GHSA?? If the score of last night game offends you....then good. Feel free to remind me of all the scores you want. When your 42 seniors graduate this year and you actually play a region schedule you can count losses too ...like last nights. I guess you are showing us how to lose with class? Typical hypocrite that loves to hate Sandy Creek .... and your disdain and discount of Fayette County Tigers is equally disgusting. I hope they beat you too. In the Old School we played hard, honestly, and we didn't say we would beat our competitors with "no doubt". Bottom line - no matter how bad we do...we are better than you...our 1100 students' team beat your 1700 students' team and you can't handle it. Or, to say it like you did " our little league' team beat your big league team. I love it- Go Pats!

I’m disappointed “old school”, you proved my point, you have no class. I thought a good clean rivalry would be possible, but your hatred towards WHS has blinded you. You don’t represent your school or the many parents I know from Sandy Creek.

Submitted by southernboy on Sat, 09/09/2006 - 10:44pm.

Proud2BWCat is giving the Pats credit for their win. Your words come across a bit harsh. Lighten up and enjoy a friendly rivalry like most of us do. It's more fun that way.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Sun, 09/10/2006 - 11:11am.

Bitter? We won! I'm lovin' it!! I have been here since Fayette County was the ONLY high school. No one ever talked so much trash and showed such disdain in the start up of their school football program as Whitewater has. Here are some facts, ...if you are from Starr's Mill they have already violated you twice via GHSA and you have yet to even play. If you are from Sandy Creek they have taunted you and every one in your region, made fun of you and your schedule and now are sore losers to you. If you are from Fayette County, they say they guarantee to beat you Friday.....and the comments are that the rest of the county (McIntosh) games will be a "yawner". IF YOU CAN DEFEND ALL OF THAT , it tells me you are a Whitewater fan or have lost your sense of sportsmanship. If you want to get along with the rest of the county, show us all a little respect. YOU are the new kid on the block ... not all the "Yawner", "little league", "guaranteed losers". A slice of humble pie would serve you young whippersnappers a world of good.

You are right my friend, this county is loaded! I’m really proud of all the schools accomplishments.

In all respects it was a great rivalry game. However, the Wildcats were taunting SC before the game which really fired up the team. The person who is for whitewater says we have an easy schedule and couldnt compete in our old divison (4-AAAA) is dead wrong. We were region champs for two years straight and had a 7-4 record last year. We dropped a divison this year only because of the school's population which is less than other schools in the region so you need to get your facts straight. Your team is full of rich snobbs who think they own Fayette County. If Whitewater would have won this game it would have been all over the website and newspaper. They worked very hard at Sandy Creek over the summer and I can guarantee that Whitewater didn't do half as much as they did so just shut up and realize that YOU LOST. LOOK AT THE SCORE, AND GET OVER IT.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Sun, 09/10/2006 - 10:57am.

Well said Patsondeck! The arrogance of WWHS is well known throughout the county. I guess when you guarantee a win next week against Fayette County, and bad mouth the other in county team that beats you, it's good sportsmanship to these 'cats'. Sore losers, it must be a blue devil thing. Let's re-cap, they violated GHSA rules against one county team twice this year(Starr's Mill), now guarantee a win against Fridays Fayette County team (this year), and lose (sorely) to us at SCHS last Friday - hummm ... is their a pattern here?? I think the team that needs to learn how to have a healthy in town 'rivalry' (as if) needs to learn how to respect the other teams first and formost. This isn't rec league despite the fact that you have rec league blue devil coaches. Well, as I said before, we will let the scoreboard speak for us and prepare for the remainder of our season. Just know that as we go off to play our 'Little League' schedule (as you so tactfully refer to it) we will smile every time we think about beating the bigger, bragadocous, arrogant kitty cats this year. Meeeeeooowwww!

Good morning Old School,
I see you have reached new lows, I’m happy this has been the biggest thing that has happened to you in some time. GHSA violations? That’s getting old, just like you. Prove it, put up or shut up. Don’t tell me do ask Campbell or the AD at WHS, prove it!

For all the Sandy Creek parents that do not represent people like "Old School", congratulations on a well played game; if you like football this was a great one to watch.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:39pm.

If you have any concern about your school you WILL ask your AD about the GHSA violations...or ask the coaches. If not - don't bother me with your problems. Your team taunted our players Friday night by the way - now I see where they learned it.

OLDSCHOOL hit the nail on the head, when you play Whitewater in any sport, there is nothing friendly about it. EVERYBODY in this county knows that. As for us beating Whitewater being the biggest thing to happen to OLDSCHOOL, that's actually quite funny. If Whitewater had beaten us...we would NEVER have heard the end of it. But they didn't...so we don't have to hear it.
Oh...and our weak schedule....what about yours? Newnan 0-2, Fayette County 1-1, WestLake 0-2, Banneker 0-2, McIntosh 0-2...the Packers could beat those guys...LOL!

Submitted by Proud2BWcat on Mon, 09/11/2006 - 3:33pm.

My point was that a victory against the Creek would have been the biggest thing for our program since its inception, not to take away from your victory in a hard fought game.

As far as our schedule, beating Newnan was a big deal; they were in the playoffs last year. Banneker and Westlake are very good teams despite their records, we are well aware of that and are not looking pass them.

I have to admit, you guys have a better team than I even knew, you should have a very good year. I wish you all the luck, and I know my Wildcats will be just fine.

Don't blame us for being crazy about our school, that's what makes it special!

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:30pm.

No one will ever knock you for being a fan of your school...... but it can be done without disrespecting the other schools in the county ... or in any otther county as far as that goes. You will learn that you will be up...and you will be down....I played for Griffin...look what happened to them whenever Spalding was opened. Now they are back. Be proud and allow others the same privlidge...if you start predicting scores and wins and games that are yawners - you will always have a problem.

I’m at peace with that Old School, you make a great point. I will retract the “yawner” comment and let the kids play the game. I hope all our schools do well; this county has tons of talent. One again, that was a great game Friday, you guys won of the best HS games I have seen in some time. Good luck against Franklin on Friday!

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:56pm.

Now you know 'OldSchoolFootball' - good luck to all the Fayette schools .... we are all going to have to stay healthy and play hard to get through the season with any hopes for the playoffs! Imagine an all county all star team playing these other counties!!!
