A Georgia Tech student was arrested Thursday at the Peachtree City Library after arranging to meet a girl he thought was 14 years old for a sexual act, police said. Miguel Angel Osnaya Velazquez, 25, a Mexican national, was charged with violation of the computer pornography and child exploitation act of 1999, police said. Velazquez was arrested by officers while he was chatting online at a library computer with the undercover officer he was supposed to meet, said Police Chief James Murray. This is the 11th arrest Peachtree City police have made since beginning its special Internet task force to focus on predators that target children. Parents are encouraged to use special software to monitor their children's Internet activities, police said. "It is unfortunate to have this type of incident occur at a city facility because it is really an Internet crime that could have occurred anywhere,” said Betsy Tyler, the city’s public information officer Thursday. “We follow the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) guidelines and have a policy in place regarding library computer usage, especially as it pertains to our younger patrons, and have filters in place to help protect under-age computer users,” Tyler said. “The citizens of Peachtree City and this state are very fortunate to have such a capable and dedicated police force focusing on this nationwide problem. This incident underscores how vitally important it is for parents to educate their children on acceptable and safe computer usage, and to be knowledgeable about and take advantage of the filters that are available to them,” Tyler said. She emphasized the following points: · This can happen from any computer with Internet access · We have policies in place, and follow the Child Internet Protection Act guidelines, but those determined to commit this type of crime can find a way. · This just underscores the need for parents to be aware and educate their children on acceptable and safe computer usage. · We’re very fortunate to have such a dedicated police force focused on this nationwide problem. login to post comments |
