Tax bills contain small error

It has been brought to our attention that there was a small glitch on the 1999 property tax bill. The error had absolutely nothing to do with the calculation of taxes due on taxable property for this year.

Each year, we show on the tax bill a calculation indicating the amount or property taxes you were not billed for, and not required to pay, due to the roll-back of the county's portion of the 1 percent local option sales tax. In addition, for residents within the city limits, we show a corresponding calculation for city taxes saved due to the roll-back against the millage rate within that city.

This year's tax bills inadvertently calculated using the prior year's roll-back millage rate, instead of 1999. Again, this calculation is for information purposes only, and has nothing to do with the amount of taxes each taxpayer is liable for.

When this came to our attention, the tax bills had already been printed and mailed, and it would have been cost-prohibitive to have attempted to remail a tax bill which had no impact on the amount of taxes due.

The office apologizes for this error, and will be glad to explain it in more detail if necessary. You may call 770-461-3652. I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and a great New Year.

George Wingo
Tax Commissioner
