Panthers, Patriots remain unbeatenBy MICHAEL BOYLAN Trends seemed to continue for the local football teams in the third week of the season, though Whitewater bounced back impressively from a loss the week before, while Landmark Christian had a bit of a setback in their loss to Social Circle. Region 4-AAAAA: Fayette County (0-3) had their hands full with the South Gwinnett Comets last Friday. Though the Tigers put up double digit numbers for the first time this season, the defense had a hard time trying top slow down South Gwinnett, which put up a lot of points in the 38-10 win. Things dont get any easier for Fayette County as they travel to take on Carrollton (3-0) on Friday. To get to Carrollton High School, take I-20 West to the Carrollton/Villa Rica Exit; exit, turn left. Go about 12 miles (you'll see a Ryan's on your right) turn left onto Hwy. 166 Bypass West. Follow to the third light and turn right. Starrs Mill (3-0) put up big numbers once again with a 35-3 win over Spalding. Kyle Mccreary rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Robby Davis added two touchdown passes in the win. The Panthers finally get a home game when they host Tri-Cities (0-1) in their homecoming game. Tri-Cities lost to Lowndes in their only game of the season 52-0. Region 4-AAAA: Sandy Creek (2-0) defeated region rival Northgate 28-10 last Friday. The Patriots put up 14 points in the first half, thanks to a 40 yard run after a fumble recovery by Brian Brown and a 51 yard run from quarterback Josh Haney. Though Northgate opened the third quarter with a field goal, Sandy Creek answered as Tim Rusell scored on a pass from Haney. Reggie Ellington added the final touchdown with an 88 yard run. Defensively, the Patriots were solid, with big plays from Michael Lockett, Rickey Nicholson and Gerren Griffin. The Patriots will host the McIntosh Chiefs (1-1) on Friday. McIntosh was off last week. Whitewater (2-1) bounced back from a second week loss to Heard County to defeat the McIntosh JV 51-7. Despite a sloppy first quarter, which featured both teams trading fumbles in a two minute period, Whitewater put points on the board first with Blake Underwood dashing nine yards for a touchdown. The Wildcat defense came out fired up after the touchdown. Falvorees Jones had a sack and Jonathan Bringuel added an interception. Just as it appeared Whitewater would add another touchdown, McIntosh recovered a fumble and ran over 90 yards for the equalizer. Whitewater added 44 unanswered points as Tavarez Dixon, Curdice Neal, Brandon Madison and Bryce Thomas all added touchdowns. Jonathan Jaurige and Justin Davis played well on defense. The Wildcats will be off this week. Region 5-A: Landmark Christian (1-2) suffered a minor setback on Friday as they lost to Social Circle 26-16. This week, Landmark will will travel to take on Bowdon (2-1). Bowdons wins came against Mt. Zion, Carrollton, 43-16 and Alpharetta, 59-17. To get to Bowdon, take I-20 west to GA exit 5, Tallapoosa-Bowdon. Turn on to GA 100 south bound and travel nine miles to the first red light in downtown Bowdon. Turn right on to GA 166 west bound and travel one mile to the flashing light. Our Lady of Mercy (0-3) lost to a speedy Oglethorpe County team, 35-6. The Bobcats had a hard time slowing down the rushing attack of Oglethorpe. They will have another challenge this week as they will travel to take on Bremen (3-0). To get to Bremen, take I-20 West to the Bremen exit (there is only one) and turn right. Go to the first red light and bear right on Business 27. Go approximately two miles. When you see a Hardees on the left, take the next right onto Laurel Street. Go through a three-way stop to a four-way stop and go straight at the four-way stop.Ê All games on Friday are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
