Wagons ho! LDS members celebrate Pioneer Day

Local LDS members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Whitewater Ward took a day last summer to rally together and celebrate the memory of their ancestors who settled the west and founded the home of the church in Salt Lake City.

Brigham Young, leader and president of the church at that time, led members of the newly established church across the country in search of a better place to settle.

“They were remarkable people,” a church spokesperson said. “Some rode in wagons and some couldn’t afford one, so they walked, pulling handcarts with all their meager belongings, seeking that special place in the west to settle and stay together in a new-found territory of their own. When Brigham Young spotted the Great Salt Lake Valley, he declared, ‘This is the place.’ The state of Utah later erected a monument to these settlers, today found atop a mountain in Salt Lake City.”

Locally, the day was celebrated by recreating the scene with handcarts and wagons, participating in pioneer games, enjoying refreshments of homemade stews, beans and bread, and vying for top prize in a pie contest where members showed off their talents in making apple, cherry and strawberry pies and cobblers.

Many wore hand sewn dresses and bonnets, showing talents and skills handed down from their ancestors through the years .
