Area players honored as state playoffs begin

On the heels of their second head-to-head match in four days, the McIntosh and Starr’s Mill volleyball teams head into this weekend’s state sectionals as the top two squads in 4-AAAAA.
McIntosh defeated Starr’s Mill Tuesday in four games to take the area title, winning the third and fourth games with identical scores of 25-23. This came on the heels of a 26-24 win by Starr’s Mill in the second game, after McIntosh opened the match with a 25-18 win.
The Lady Chiefs, ranked seventh in the state, travel to Parkview for tomorrow’s state sectionals, while the Lady Panthers, ranked ninth, play in Savannah.
Neely Thomson, a McIntosh senior outside hitter and team captain, was named the area’s Most Valuable Player. Joining her on the All-Area team are McIntosh senior middle blocker Jessica Wedemyer along with Starr’s Mill juniors Shelley MacBean and Niki Patriarca.
Making the list from Coweta County were East Coweta senior Megan Darrah and Newnan junior Katherine Poss. Senior Tiffany Norris represents Fayette County High on the squad.
Dottie Licciardi of Starr’s Mill was named Area 4-AAAAA All Area Coach of the Year.
