Mayor: I’m not in favorof Tennant’s reelection

It has come to my attention that some of the residents in Peachtree City have been led to believe that I am endorsing the campaign for reelection of Dan Tennant. Please know that I am not supporting this effort.
Although I voted for Councilman Tennant four years ago and aided him with his previous campaign, his present campaign is now being supported by a group that was formerly his opposition.
This is not an emotional rejection of the Councilman Tennant’s political persona. Rather it is my decision, as well as that of some of his past core constituents, based on the following issues:
1. Tennant has consistently fought with elected officials on both sides of the political fence making it difficult for anyone to be productive working with him.
2. Tennant voted to add over a dozen new employees in 2000 and failed to be fiscally responsible by not coming up with the necessary revenue to pay for the positions. The result was the largest depletion of city emergency cash reserves ($1.5 million)in the city’s history. This is not being fiscally conservative and the city has been in a budgeting slump ever since.
3. Tennant’s solution of a budget consisting of no new taxes meant giving half of the city staff a cost of living raise and neglecting the other half. This would have killed staff morale and caused conflict between city departments.
4. In four years in office, Tennant has consistently voted in favor of variances that could cause the destruction of our green buffer zoning setbacks and protections in our subdivisions.
5. Tennant has missed more meetings than any councilman in the history of the city. In addition, his job takes him out of town nearly every weekday, leaving him out of touch with the residents.
6. Tennant is now the champion of the Development Authority (DAPC) and favors the taxpayers repaying the millions of dollars of debt that the authority has incurred at the expense of our other valued sports facilities and associations. [Former] Authority Member Doug Warner actually appears on his campaign literature as a supporter.
7. Tennant has a quote of support in his campaign literature from from former Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mike Hofrichter who actively worked to have government officials meet in a manner that would avoid having to comply with state open meetings law. Mr. Hofrichter does not even reside in PTC.
8. Tennant is accepting financial support from former City Attorney Rick Lindsey who recently attempted to have our valued tree buffer ordinances ruled unconstitutional for a local developer.
9. Tennant has been responsible for creating the deadlock on the votes concerning the Development Authority mismanagement.
It is documented that he has been informed on this issue over the past two years by city staff and authority members and never voted in favor of corrective actions.
Working through the process with Councilman Tennant has been frustrating and he does not have my endorsement.

Steve Brown
Mayor, Peachtree City
