Local teams remain near top of state rankings

Several local volleyball teams are hovering near the top of the state rankings as next week’s area tournaments approach next week.

The latest coaches poll, released Monday, has Landmark Christian in the No. 5 spot, right behind Woodward Academy. McIntosh is seventh, and Starr’s Mill is 13th.

McIntosh: Saturday was a full day of competition for the Lady Chiefs, with five matches at Northview High. After wins over Holy Innocents and Blessed Trinity, the team lost to Marist, the state’s second-ranked team. The Lady Chiefs rebounded for match wins over South Cobb and Northview.

Starr’s Mill: The Lady Panthers won an important area match last week against East Coweta that stretched to five games. The final score was 25-16, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14 and 15-12.

The Lady Panthers won their first two matches last Thursday in the Conyers Classic, over Decatur (28-26, 26-24) and Henry County (25-9, 25-21). They followed that up Saturday with wins against Salem (25-16, 25-17) and St. Pius (25-20, 24-26, 15-10) before losing in the tournament semifinals to Oconee (20-25, 25-21, 12-15).

In the area playoffs, which Starr’s Mill will host beginning next week, the Lady Panthers will likely be seeded second, behind McIntosh.

Sandy Creek: In recent region action, the Lady Patriots won matches against Douglas County, Alexander and Lithia Springs, all in three straight games.

The team also fell to Woodward in its toughest match so far this season.
