Arlington Christian wins region title

Arlington Christian School claimed the Georgia Independent Schools Association’s Region 1-AAA softball championship last week with a 4-3 win over Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy of Henry County. The team was scheduled to travel to Milledgeville Saturday for the first round of the state tournament.

After losing four seniors from last season, Arlington fielded a young team behind the pitching of sophomore Katie Hearn. In the game to clinch region, she was 3-for-3 at the plate and pitched all 7 innings, giving up only 5 hits with 2 strikeouts.

“The game reflected a great degree of talent and enthusiasm,” said head coach Greg Cannon. “For the most part, the defense kept the ball confined to the infield.”

Eagle’s Landing took a 1-0 lead in the first when their second batter hit a double down the left-field line. Another hit to straightaway center resulted in a run for ELCA.

Arlington answered in the first when Gabby Buck reached first and advanced on a wild pitch. Shawna Shipley then blasted a grounder to second to score Buck for Arlington. Neither team scored in the second.

Eagle’s Landing took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Arlington came back when Buck hit a triple over the left fielder’s head. Shipley drilled the ball to score her, but was out at the plate. Hearn singled and then stole a base. A double by Heather Lyon to right field tied the score at 3.

In the fourth, Buck walked and stole second. She scored the go-ahead run when Hearn singled. Good defense and Hearn’s strong pitching held ELCA scoreless through the final innings.

First baseman Sydney Singleton made a diving catch in the seventh to save a run. Other players contributing to the Arlington win were Dallas Moroy, second base, Shortstop Jessica Maslowe, and Kristen McGuffey, who was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Starr’s Mill, Fayette County: Going into yesterday’s scheduled showdown (which was played after this paper went to press), the Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers were still the highest ranked teams in the county according to the latest coaches poll, with less than one week left in the regular season.

Starr’s Mill still tops the AAAAA state rankings, followed by Brookwood, Kell, Woodstock, South Gwinnett, Lowndes, Harrison and Fayette County. Sequoyah and Lassiter round out the top 10.

The area tournament is set to begin Monday at Fayette County.

Landmark: The Lady War Eagles are 1-8 in Region 5-A competition and will likely be in sixth place going into the region tournament, according to head coach Carrie Irwin.

McIntosh: With an 11-10 mark overall and 4-3 in Region 4-AAAAA, the Lady Chiefs are looking to surprise some people in next week’s tournament.

“We have been playing some of our best softball of the season, but we are having a hard time ‘closing the deal,’” said head coach Kristy Lewis, referring to last week’s tough 4-1 loss to East Coweta, a game McIntosh led 1-0 going into the seventh inning. “I think we have the opportunity to be the spoiler coming into the region tournament.”

Sandy Creek: In Region 4-AAAA play, the Lady Patriots are currently fifth, behind Chapel Hill, Alexander, Northgate and Woodward. But that is misleading, head coach Lisa Pearce said.

“I believe we are playing our best ball this second half of the season,” she said. “The girls are coming together, we’re hitting the ball, and our attitude is to win the region tournament. I’m very proud of them so far.”

The team’s overall record is 12-12-1. After losing two heartbreakers to Woodward and Chapel Hill, the Lady Patriots won 11-1 over North Clayton and 11-6 over Lovejoy. Ashleigh Ward had two triples against North Clayton and two home runs and a triple against Lovejoy. Ryan Walker added an inside-the-park homer.
