Patriots tame Tigers 34-10

After a first-week bye, the Sandy Creek Patriots started a season of high expectations with a rousing 34-10 win over the Fayette County Tigers, the first time they have ever defeated their intracounty rival, last Friday night in Fayetteville.

Two Fayette teams in state rankings

Trying to stay busy amid a light region schedule, the Fayette County Lady Tigers got in six games over the weekend during a tournament at Cherokee High, winning five to boost their overall record to 13-2.

Lauren Cartwright and Brittany Stevens of the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team in Peachtree City were selected by Georgia Swimming as members of its Southern Zone Championship team.

Landmark fourth at Berry meet

The Landmark cross-country teams competed well at last weekend’s Berry Invitational, as the boys and girls each finished fourth out of 24 teams. The girls were first and the boys second among Class A squads, and the girls soundly defeated Athens Academy, last year’s state champions.

The most recent state volleyball coaches poll shows three local schools among the top-ranked in the state.

Deer hunters anticipate opening of archery season

The statewide archery hunting season for white-tailed deer opens Saturday and runs through Oct. 10. Bowhunters also can continue to use archery equipment throughout primitive weapons and firearms season if desired and may take deer of either sex during the entire deer season. Last year, more than 97,000 archery hunters harvested approximately 37,800 deer, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division.
