Two Fayette teams in state rankings

Trying to stay busy amid a light region schedule, the Fayette County Lady Tigers got in six games over the weekend during a tournament at Cherokee High, winning five to boost their overall record to 13-2.

In pool play, the team got shutout wins over Dade County (5-0), Chattahoochee (5-0) and McEachern (8-0) to move into the next round of competition. After a 3-2 victory over Roswell, the Lady Tigers lost 1-0 to Kell before picking up a 4-1 win over Ringgold to finish the tournament in third place.

The latest rankings from www.gafastpitch.net, released Monday evening, put the Lady Tigers at the number-four spot in the state in AAAAA, behind Kell, Brookwood and Lowndes.

Starr’s Mill: Right behind Fayette County, the Lady Panthers are fifth in the latest state poll, after a week that included a 6-2 win over McIntosh.

Our Lady of Mercy: It was a historic week for the Lady Bobcats. They picked up their first-ever varsity win last week, beating Galloway 20-15. A loss to Bowdon, ranked seventh in Class A after making the final eight last year, put the OLM record at 1-3 and 0-1 in the region. Leading the team in hitting so far are Robin Keuler, Leah Kearns, Marina Fleming and Brittani Scott.
