Tigers take World Series title
The Georgia Tigers, a team of 13-year-olds that plays out of Handley Park in Tyrone, recently capped off an outstanding year of baseball with a trip to Clearwater, Fla., where they finished first in the International Baseball Championship World Series. The tournament, which pitted some of the toughest team from throughout the country against each other, saw two Georgia squads compete for the title. The Georgia Shockers, a team from the north side of Atlanta, ended regulation play against the Tigers in a tie. The Tigers eventually pushed the winning run across in the 11th inning to claim the championship. Four of the Tigers were named to the tournament's All-Star team, with two named as All-Tournament Defensive Player and tournament Most Valuable Player. This brought to an end the team's 2003 season, during which it compiled a 29-8-1 record against 13-year-old teams and a 39-14-1 overall mark. Team members included Todd Brock, Tyler Cichonski, Ed Cook, Parker Dupont, Sean Finn, Luke Griffith, James Kimsey, Michael Leonard, Brandon Miller, Matt Norton, Jonathan Smith, Landon Tufte, Trenton Turner, and Chris Vasquez. The team is coached by Keith Brock, Mike Cook, and Shawn Boatwright.
