Pioneers stand out at three meets

As has often been the case this season, members of the Southside Pioneers Track Club recently posted top performances at more than one event simultaneously.

Mauri Peoples was the only member of the team to compete at the USATF National Junior Olympics Championship in Miami. She placed 11th overall in the Youth Girls running long jump with a jump of 4.86 meters. She and Tina Williams are ranked as National Youth Elite All-Americans.

Tina Williams took a gold medal at the 2003 AAU National Champion at Eastern Michigan University in the Under 9 Girls 400-meter run with a time of 1:08. She also took a silver medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.95. She is ranked first in the nation in her age group. Meanwhile, her sister, Lisa Williams, placed in the 1500-meter run and 800-meter run.

James Mathis struck gold at the State Games of America in Hartford, Ct., in the javelin throw (90'), the running long jump (17'7"), and the 4x100M relay. Mathis took third place in the discus throw (25m) and the high jump (5'1"). His brother, David, took the silved medal in the 400M with a time of 1:02. Canesha Edwards won a gold medal in the 400M (1:00) and the 4x100M Relay, and bronze medals in the 200M (26.9), and third running long jump (15'9"). Najee Pace won a gold medal in the 4x100M Relay.
