SCAT sends two swimmers to nationals Joseph Redmon and Billy Jamerson of the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team have qualified for the USA Swimming National Championships Aug. 5-9 at the University of Maryland. Both swimmers qualified for nationals at the Junior National Championships in April, where they both won individual titles. Redmon, 16, is the Junior National Champion in the 50-meter butterfly and the Georgia state champion in the 200 butterfly for the recently completed long course season. He spends nearly 20 hours each week training in the pool in addition to helping coach the Peachtree City Pacers, a local recreational swim team. His favorite event is the 200 fly and he often indulges in a "smoothie" power drink before races. In his spare time he enjoys playing guitar. He will be a junior at Newnan High School in the fall. He plans to swim in college and pursue a degree in the medical field. Jamerson, 17, is the Junior National Champion in the 100 breaststroke. He is the current Georgia long course state champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He, too, spends about 20 hours training each week. His favorite event is the 100 individual medley, and his favorite power meal before a meet is pancakes. His spare time activities include reading and playing X-Box games. He is an upcoming senior at Sandy Creek High School in Fayette County. His future plans include college swimming and a career in dentistry. "There are nearly 300,000 competitive swimmers in the United States and only about 1000 will qualify for Nationals. That percentage is less than .04, which makes this honor pretty special," said SCAT head coach Jamey Myers. "We hope Billy and Joe can transition to the next level and compete with the best swimmers in the country." The Southern Crescent Aquatic Team is a USA Swimming year-round competitive team based in Peachtree City serving the south metro Atlanta area. General team tryouts are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m.-noon. More information about SCAT is available at www.scatswimming.org or by calling 678-595-7314.
