Church too big for zoning

Old Landmark Church of God and Christ on Margaret Street in Fairburn is too big, 23.5 feet too big to be exact. The request for a variance on the front yard setback was denied during Tuesday night's Board of Zoning Appeal meeting.

Hartsfield number one

Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is ranked first in 2001 productivity and efficiency among the 50 leading airports worldwide according to the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), officials announced last week. Hartsfield's No. 1 ranking leads Charlotte, Honolulu, Minneapolis and Houston which round out the top five most productive airports.

Budget tweaked by Commission

At last week's meeting, the Board of Commissioners took steps to keep the 2003 General Fund budget in balance. The amended budget includes a rollback in the millage rate without severe cuts in health, human services, libraries, and criminal justice programs.

Revitalization planned for Fairburn block

The 100 block of Golightly Street in Fairburn will be getting a whole new look. The eight lots which were offered on the open market were snatched up by Chinh Nguyen, a real estate investor who is looking to revitalize the area.

Public forum on housing set

Fulton County Vice Chairman and District 7 Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards will host a public forum to discuss multi-family housing next Thursday.

Contracts for senior services approved

Senior services for Fulton County's 150,000 elderly will be provided in 2003-2004 by eight agencies approved last week by the Board of Commissioners.

Senior resolution passed

At its July 16 meeting, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners overwhelmingly approved a resolution by District 5 Commissioner Emma I. Darnell that could allow caregiver employees to name grandchildren or disabled dependents as beneficiaries under the county's defined benefit retirement plan.

Hug-a-child show set for Sunday

The First Annual Hug-a-Child Celebrity Car and Bike Show will be held Sunday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Ga. The event is a fundraiser to generate awareness and proceeds for the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta®.

CCSU sets Oct. 25 homecoming

Clayton College & State University is formulating plans for the big 2003 Homecoming celebration. This year's theme, "Feel It, Hear It, Laker Spirit", will permeate the campus with weeklong activities that will culminate Saturday, Oct. 25.

Chick-fil-A to debut new restaurant design

The new shopping development at Camp Creek Parkway will be the first location in metro Atlanta to debut Chick-fil-A's new free-standing design. Opening today, the new prototype features warmer interior colors, wood accents, and other changes intended to make the restaurant more efficient and the dining experience more pleasurable.

Full night of action at Senoia Speedway

In the Allan Vigil Ford Pro Late Model 50-lap feature last Saturday night at Senoia Speedway, Rusty Clanton recorded the fastest qualifying lap, then rolled a two on the dice, placing him in the second starting position on the outside of the front row. That advanced Frankie Farmer into the pole position for the start of the feature.

Coweta company acquires golf courses

Lee Burton, vice president for golf of Patten Seed Company, announces the sale of the majority interest in Canongate Golf Clubs to Sequoia Golf LLC, a Sharpsburg corporation.

Community sports briefs

The Wendell Coffee Golf Center in Tyrone is hosting the 2003 Summer Break Junior Golf Camps. Sessions will be held every week from June 2 through Aug. 14, and all camps run Monday through Thursday.From 8:30 to 11:30 is instruction, followed by lunch, then from 12:30 to 2:30 the juniors will play 9 holes of golf on the Par 3 course.
