Program participants learn sports injury prevention Whether making a slam dunk on the basketball court, hitting a home run on the t-ball field or landing a double-axle on the ice, athletes of all ages constantly put a great deal of stress and strain on their bodies. This wear and tear, as well as other hazards inherent to sports, often results in injuries that could have otherwise been prevented with the proper preparation and training. According to Kay Camacho, an Educational Services employee at the Metro Atlanta chapter of the American Red Cross, "Research indicates that about half of all sports injuries can be prevented." With this in mind, the Red Cross and the United States Olympic Committee developed the Sport Safety Training Program in 1997. "This course will provide the basic information needed to prevent injuries and to respond effectively if an emergency does occur," said Camacho. According to Camacho, the program is geared toward coaches but officials, teachers and parents are also excellent candidates. The course covers fundamental principles of first aid, proper treatment for various sports injuries and safety responsibilities of coaches. Adult and child CPR training is also provided. Camacho added that one of the main focuses of the program is determining when it is safe for coaches to return players to the game. She stressed that although it's a common suggestion, "shaking it off" is not always the best or the safest option. Camacho added that a primary goal of the course is to remedy highly prevalent and detrimental coaching errors such as this. Courses will be offered on weekday evenings to accommodate people who coach on Saturdays. Registration is now open for the next 8-hour class scheduled for Sept. 11 and Sept. 18 from 6-10 p.m. Participants must attend both nights to become certified. Sessions will be offered at Atlanta Red Cross chapter headquarters, 1955 Monroe Dr. NE in Atlanta. Schools, recreational groups or other local organizations that are interested may make alternate arrangements to accommodate their groups. The program fee is $65 per person.
