BSC baseball inks Georgia standout

Casey Bond, a 6-3, 180-pound right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Starr's Mill High School, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play college baseball for Birmingham-Southern College.

Bond was a multiple-sport star at Starr's Mill, lettering in both baseball and basketball. He hit .343 with one home run, 17 RBI and 25 runs scored as a senior while notching a 3-3 record in nine mound appearances for Brent Moseley's club. For his efforts, he was named to the Georgia Dugout Club All-Star Team and the team's Best All-Around Player.

A standout in the classroom as well, Bond was an honor graduate at Starr's Mill who was a member of the Junior Beta Club and a four-year member of the Principal's List for high academics.

"We are very pleased that Casey has decided to join our baseball family at Birmingham-Southern College," Shoop said. "He is our third quality student-athlete to sign this year and is committed to success both in the classroom and on the baseball field. Casey's greatest asset is his foot speed, which allows him to fit into our style of play. We are also excited that he is a true dual-position player since we lost four pitchers off our 2003 squad. We certainly expect Casey to help us both in the outfield and on the mound."

Shoop's Panthers finished the 2003 season 33-18 overall and 12-8 against the Big South Conference. Now shed of their provisional NCAA Division I membership, BSC will be fully eligible for the Big South Conference regular season and postseason championships and the NCAA Baseball Tournament in the upcoming 2004 season.

Bond joins 2002-03 signees Paul Jones (6-6, LHP, Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright) and Brandon Hynick (6-0, RHP/OF, North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) as the newest members of the BSC baseball family. He also joins former Starr's Mill mound standout Steve White at Birmingham-Southern. White made four relief appearances for the Panthers as a sophomore pitcher for BSC in 2003.
