Career fair for veterans coming to CCSU SmartStart for New Veterans, Clayton State's online employment assistance program for the military community, has scheduled its second Military/Community Career Fair Aug. 22 in the University's Harry S. Downs Center for Continuing Education. SmartStart hosted its first career fair April 25 when more than 200 job seekers came to the Downs Center and met with representatives from 24 of SmartStart's corporate partners. Reaction from participants and prospective employers alike was enthusiastic, describing the event as well planned, well organized and highly professional. More than 50 members of the military community, including their spouses, also participated. The August Career Fair will be ongoing from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will have recruiters from local and national companies seeking qualified applicants. While the primary focus of the event is on military veterans, those interested from the civilian community are also welcome. SmartStart, Clayton State's Division of Continuing Education's national online employment assistance program for recruiting, training, and placing service members and spouses exiting the military into well-paying civilian careers, was originally funded by a $927,000 U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to Clayton State in 2001. A Phase II grant has extended the program through Apr. 30, 2004. SmartStart, which is provided at no cost to veterans, supports enlisted military persons (E-2 to E-6), officers (O-1, O-2 and O-3) and their spouses serving at any U.S. military installations. The use of the SmartStart online program has allowed easy and rapid expansion to U.S. military installations worldwide. The non-credit training, provided through the University's Division of Continuing Education, is job specific and directly related to the skills and education requirements of the program's corporate partners. Clayton College & State University's Downs Center is located approximately 20 miles south of Atlanta. Visit the SmartStart Web site at www.smartstartvets.org for more information on the Aug. 22 Military/Community Career Fair and directions.
