Report shows
growth at Hartsfield
More than a half-million
jobs and billions of dollars have been pumped into the area economy in
the past year as a result of activity at Hartsfield International Airport,
according to a study released recently.
Last year,
passenger and air cargo activity at Hartsfield resulted in over 647,000
total airport and related jobs, including more than 55,000 jobs directly
generated at Hartsfield, and business revenues in excess of $18.8 billion
to the region, the 2002 Economic Impact Report said.
"Atlanta's
economy and its success in attracting companies is directly related to
its ability to provide access to the global transportation system and
we are continuing to serve passengers with new routes and facilities to
meet those needs," aviation general manager Ben DeCosta said. "The
study on Hartsfield's 2002 economic impact illustrates the enormous influence
the Airport has on the Atlanta metropolitan region as a generator of revenue
and jobs."
The City of
Atlanta, Department of Aviation retained the services of Martin Associates
to estimate the economic impact that Hartsfield's passenger and air cargo
activity has on the Atlanta region.
In 2002, the
airport accommodated almost 77 million passengers and more than 730,000
metric tons of air cargo. For the fourth consecutive year Hartsfield is
the world's busiest passenger airport, more than 10 million passengers
ahead of the second place airport, Chicago O'Hare. In fact, Hartsfield
was the only "Top 10" U.S. airport to experience passenger growth
in 2002.
Business revenue
to firms providing services at the airport and to the local business industry
has also increased by almost $2.0 billion since 1999.
Of the 38.6
million passengers who boarded flights at Hartsfield last year, 15.7 million
were visitors to the Atlanta area, consisting of 14.3 million domestic
and 1.4 million international travelers.
Compared to
the Airport's "1999 Economic Impact" report, the 2002 economic
impact study data reveals that Hartsfield added over 142,000 total jobs,
both in Airport and related services, and increased direct jobs by more
than 10,000. Hartsfield is the state's largest employer.
