Music Midtown celebrates 10 great years this weekend By MICHAEL
BOYLAN It was 10 years ago that concert promoters launched Music Midtown, a three-day music festival in Atlanta. Since its inception, Music Midtown has been one of the highlights of the year for music fans of all ages in the Atlanta area as well as much of the Southeast. In recent years Music Midtown has played host to such acts as The Allman Brothers Band, Run DMC, Counting Crows, Bob Dylan, Bad Company, Indigo Girls and hundreds of others. This year's lineup promises to be as good, if not better, than any of the past festivals. Music Midtown 2003 will take place May 2-4 in the area near SciTrek and the Atlanta Civic Center, the same venue as the last few years. There will be 11 stages full of music and over 120 artists and bands performing. In addition to wall-to-wall music, there will be KidsTown, a children's entertainment area, an artists market, dozens of food vendors and hundreds of thousands of people to people-watch. The main attraction is the music and the festival kicks off right on Friday with some big acts. The highlights include Unwritten Law and Live on the 99X stage, Cracker, Sheryl Crow and Bob Dylan on the 96 Rock stage, Francine Reed and LL Cool J on the V-103 stage and Steve Winwood and the B-52's on the Z93 stage. There a few acts that stand out on Saturday afternoon including Alana Davis on 96 Rock, Shaggy at V-103 and Sixpence None the Richer on the Fox 5 stage. 99X's evening lineup includes Cowboy Mouth, Evanesence, Saliva and Godsmack, while 96 Rock will feature G. Love and Special Sauce, Tonic, and Collective Soul. V-103 will feature K-Ci and JoJo, Morris Day and the Time and The Isley Brothers, Z-93 will have Medeski, Martin and Wood, Joe Cocker and Crosby, Stills and Nash and Fox 5 will present Buddy Guy, The Mavericks and Tony Bennett. The festival will finish up on Sunday but not before some of the biggest acts take the stages. 99X will have Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and Zwan, while 96 Rock will present Drivin N' Cryin, Everclear and Def Leppard. V-103 will have Fat Joe, Ashanti, Bone Crusher and India Arie, Z-93 will have Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Bob Weir and RatDog and Government Mule and Fox-5 will feature Aimee Mann, Susan Tedeschi and The Gipsy Kings. In addition to these main stages, there will be a Locals Only stage by the 99x stage, a 95.5 The Beat stage filled with non-stop dance music, the KidsTown stage and a small stage in the artists market filled with performance artists, dance exhibitions and more. Tickets to Music Midtown are $45 for a three day pass. Visitors are not allowed to bring in outside food or drink. Parking is extremely limited so ticket holders are urged to take MARTA and exit at the Civic Center or North Avenue stations.
