The Renaissance was a time of the great revival of art, literature, and learning in Europe that lasted from the 14th century to the 17th century, marking the transition from the medieval to the modern world. The Georgia Renaissance Festival is a seven weekend festival that honors the period with entertainment, crafts, food and fun. The festival is marking its 18th year this year and has several new attractions to go along with a number of returning favorites that bring the crowds back year after year.

New to the festival this year are belly dancing exhibitions from the Awalim Dance Company, sword swallowing from Dai Andrews, Georgia Heartland Humane Society pet adoption, a puppet museum and several thrilling new rides. There will also be jousting from the Hanlon-Lees Jousting Knights, the return of the Georgia Birds of Prey Show, pirates and King Henry the VIII's search for a new wife. Other returning acts are the comedy of the Tortuga Twins, the Washing Well Wenches, the juggling and comedy of The Zucchini Brothers and musical performances from Three Quarter Ale, The Lost Boys, Mickle-A-Do, Cast in Bronze and a myriad of merry minstrels and musicians.

There is also an artisan market that features over 150 artisans and a number of wares for visitors to peruse and possibly purchase including jewelry, skychairs, shoes, candles, artwork and more. One of the biggest attractions to the festival is the food, including the ever-popular turkey legs. The festival serves over 40 tons of turkey legs each season. A new treat this year is macaroni and cheese on a stick. Other favorite treats are funnel cakes, spiral potato, ice cream, fried pickles and much, much more.

The Georgia Renaissance Festival will run Saturdays and Sundays, plus Memorial Day, Apr. 26-June 8, from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The festival is located at I-85 at Exit 61 - Peachtree City/Fairburn (follow the signs). Admission is $15 for adults, $11 for seniors, $7 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under the age of five. Discount tickets are available at www.georgiarenaissancefestival.com.
