Sharing more than a few coincidences, two Episcopal pastors meet in Illinois

When Father David Epps of Sharpsburg met Father John Manning in a hospital in Urbana, Ill., he did a double-take.

Not only did the two resemble each other as much as brothers but, after talking for a while, they discovered that their lives were filled with numerous coincidences

Epps is rector of Christ the King Charismatic Episcopal Church in Sharpsburg. Manning is rector of Christ the Redeemer Charismatic Episcopal Church in Urbana. Both are former social workers.

Epps founded Christ the King on the second Sunday in September, 1996. Manning founded Christ the Redeemer the same day. Both hold positions appointed by their bishops Epps is a canon in Georgia and Manning is a dean in Illinois.

Epps had traveled to Illinois to visit a friend who had been hospitalized there. The friend he went to visit is now a member of Manning's church.

Epps said they both were startled when they discovered how much they rersembled each other and how much they had in common. "It was almost like looking in a mirror," he said.
