County library hosts music historian and performer Gary Nichols By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Gary Nichols was born in New York state but has found a lot of musical success south of the Mason-Dixon line. He will bring along his guitar and wealth of musical knowledge to the Fayette County Public Library for a performance tomorrow at 7 p.m. Nichols is a self-taught musician. One of the first bands he played with was The Westones, which was a popular local dance band in his native Sullivan County, N.Y. When not playing music and entertaining audiences, Nichols was a DJ for WVOS, Mountain Country. It was his love of country music that took him to Nashville, Tenn. In Nashville, Nichols continued his musical career, while also appearing as "The Big 'G'" at Opryland Theme Park. Throughout his musical career Nichols has opened for or shared the stage with artists like Crystal Gayle, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash among others and has appeared in videos for Travis Tritt, Reba McEntire, Brooks and Dunn, Garth Brooks and more. At Thursday's performance, Nichols will perform some of America's "almost forgotten" songs from the 1920s through the early 1960s. The program will include songs by Sammy Cahn, Harry James, The Mills Brothers, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Eddy Arnold, Hoagy Carmichael and others. Nichols plays an acoustic guitar but also plays rhythm while incorporating bass runs and jazz chords which gives his set a surprisingly full sound.
