Golf, soccer keeps spring breakers busy

A few dozen young athletes managed to stay busy during spring break by participating in two local sports camps last week.

A group of golfers ages 7-15 braved some less-than-ideal weather conditions last week at the Wendell Coffee Golf Center in Tyrone. Four sessions were planned, and everything was pushed back a day when Monday's opening round was rained out, according to camp director Sean Coffee.

"It was 33 degrees when we started to play Wednesday, and 36 degrees when we finished," he added.

Players on their swings and short games each morning, and a round on the par-3 course was the daily routine after lunch.

The last day was highlighted by several contests, including a long drive contest (gauged according to age), chipping contest and putting contest. The weather improved greatly by the end of the week, Coffee said.

Weather was not a factor at the Soccer Centre in Fayetteville, where about 20 players worked out at the indoor facility during five morning sessions.

The players, ages 5-12, took part in a wide variety of activities, according to Charlie Morgan, director of the Centre. Some were age-specific, while others involved everyone.

"There were a lot of contests," he said. "The main focus was to have fun and enjoy the game."

Most of the players were previously active at the Centre, although two or three of them were new to soccer. "They seemed to have a really good time," said Morgan.

There are two separate "fields" at the Centre, one large and one small, and both were in use during the camp.

At least two weeks of camps are planned for the summer, with more details coming soon at www.soccercentre.info. Also on tap this summer is an outdoor six-on-six league, which Morgan said would concentrate on the fun aspects of soccer, meaning a lack of emphasis on practices, and players being mixed and matched every time they come out.

Summer will be a busy time at the Golf Center as well, with camps planned for virtually every week, Coffee said.
