OLM stages Hunger Banquet With millions of people across the globe starving to death on a daily basis, many local high school students do not see the actual tragedy that is taking place. The students at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School in Fayette County learned the lesson of global starvation the hard way March 12. Campus ministry teacher Margarete Smith conducted a Hunger Banquet where students were divided into three divisions representing the lower class, the middle class and the upper class of people across the earth. Each class was served a meal that was reflective of what people in those divisions eat each day. The upper class was served a hot meal complete with salad and dessert. The middle class was served a meal consisting of bean soup and water. The lower class was served a very small portion of rice and water. The students were not aware of what class they were being placed into. "We tried to represent what is going on around our world each day," said Smith. "Fifteen percent of the world is in the upper class, 30 percent is in the middle class and 55 percent is in the lower class. Our students are very blessed but we wanted to give them a dose of reality. "The students that represented the lower class were shocked to see what they would have to eat each day. I think many of them realized how fortunate they are to be here and have what they need to survive." The Hunger Banquet kicked off the Operation Rice Bowl project designed to raise funds to assist the less fortunate around the world.
