Catholic Church of St. Gabriel announces activities, Masses for Holy Week, Easter The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville will begin the celebration of Holy Week with a joint blessing of palms with the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, its next door neighbor, on Palm Sunday, April 13. Father Jimmy Adams of St. Gabriel's and Father Bob Hudak of Nativity will lead the joint blessing. Each congregation will then proceed to their individual churches for Sunday services. The Catholic community also will distribute palms at other Masses that weekend, beginning with the Saturday Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m., again at the Sunday 8 a.m. Mass, and at the Life Teen Mass at 5 p.m. On Thursday, April 17, the church will celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper at 7 p.m. The service will include the reenactment of the washing of feet. On Good Friday, April 18, the community will listen to and meditate on the seven last words of Christ until mid afternoon and, at 3 p.m., the Stations of the Cross will be walked jointly with neighbors from Nativity. St. Gabriel members also recently began a new tradition of blessing the food for the Easter meal at noon on Good Friday. This is a tradition initiated by the Eastern church and brought to St. Gabriel's by Adams. The Good Friday evening service at 7 p.m. will include the reading of the Passion of the Lord and veneration of the cross. Saturday, the Celebration of the Resurrection begins with the Vigil Mass at 8 p.m. The service will begin with the lighting of the new fire outside the church and members will proceed inside for the Mass. Sunday morning, April 20, Easter Masses will be celebrated at 8 and 10:30 a.m. The Life Teen band, Gabriel's Voice, will provide music for the 8 a.m. Mass and the adult choir will perform at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday. St. Gabriel's is at 152 Antioch Rd., just south of the intersection of Antioch and Ga. Hwy. 92 South. For additional information or directions, call the parish office, 770-461-0492. |
