St. Andrew's Episcopal makes plans for Holy Week, Easter Holy Week services at St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines begin with Palm Sunday Holy Communion Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30, 9:15 and 11 a.m. There will be a palm procession at both the 9:15 and 11 a.m. services. At 7 p.m. there will be a dramatic reading. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14, 15 and 16, there will be Holy Communion at 6 a.m. April 14 the Ruth and Naomi chapter of the Daughters of the King will host "Christ in the Passover," a 45-minute presentation of the items that were used in an Old Testament Passover commemoration of the deliverance of the ancient Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. In conjunction with the presentation will be a meal featuring several traditional Passover dishes. Everyone is invited to the dinner, which begins at 6 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. The first service of Tenebrae, a service of lessons and psalms, will begin at 9 p.m. Wednesday. The Maundy Thursday services begin at 7:30 p.m. with Holy Communion and the washing of feet. During this rite, members of the congregation are invited to come to the altar where the priests will wash their feet in accordance with the passage in St. John's Gospel. Maundy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Lord's supper. Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means commandment, that is, "...I give you a new commandment that you love one another..." After communion, the congregants will help the priests strip the altar in anticipation of the Lord's death on the cross. The lights will be extinguished and all will leave the church. The second Tenebrae will begin at 9 p.m. followed immediately by the all-night vigil with the altar of repose. Members of the congregation will be at the church throughout the night. Those who wish to pray in one-hour increments may do so by calling the church, 770-487-8415, or by signing up in the narthex of the church. There is no limit to how many may be present. "When I came last year at 3 a.m. there were 12 people here," the Rev. Dan Brigham recalled. The all-night vigil is in keeping with Jesus' question to his sleeping apostles in the garden of Gethsemane, "Can't you watch with me just one hour?" The Good Friday service begins April 18 at noon with prayers and veneration of the cross, as well as a sermon. The service is about one hour long. The third and last Tenebrae will begin at 9 p.m. The Holy Saturday service is at 7:30 a.m. and the first service of Easter begins at 9 p.m. with the candlelight Easter Vigil. The high Masses of Easter morning will be at 7:30, 9:15 and 11 a.m. In addition to the regular Sunday School schedule, there will be an Easter egg hunt for the young children at 10:30 a.m. St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines is at 316 Peachtree Parkway North in Peachtree City. There will be a nursery available at all services. For more information about the church and its services, call 770-487-8415. |
