Soccer teams face region opponents and get mixed results By MICHAEL
BOYLAN The weather over the weekend was much better than it has been for the local soccer teams and some of those teams responded well. Sandy Creek's Lady Patriots improved to 4-1 on the season with a 4-2 win over Lithia Springs on Friday. Katie Wilson had a hat trick for Sandy Creek, while Malika Rajendara added the fourth goal. Both the Lady Patriots and Patriots will play in the East Coweta Invitational beginning this evening with games against Northgate. Starr's Mill's Lady Panthers defeated Milton 3-0 on Friday night and then beat Mundy's Mill on Saturday 15-0. The game against Milton saw a scoreless first half but the Lady Panthers came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. Sarah Burke cored the first goal off of an assist from Lindsey Anderson. The team scored again five minutes later when Kelley O'Hara found the back of the net after an assist from Tannah Castro. With less than six minutes remaining Starr's Mill's Beth Meadors scored the final goal on an assist from Castro. In the Mundy's Mill game O'Hara, Michelle Callen and Lindsey Proia each had a hat trick, while Meadors added two goals and Erin Shah, Katie Jacobsen, Anderson and Castro each had one goal. O'Hara added four assists while Shah added three. With the win, goalkeeper Cindy Westmoreland notched her fourth shutout of the season. Starr's Mill will play at Walton tonight at 7:30 p.m. The boys lost a 1-0 game to Milton on Friday and responded with a 15-0 win over Mundy's Mill on Saturday. They hosted Carver-Columbus last night after the paper went to press. Fayette County's boys and girls took on East Coweta on Friday night and lost. The Lady Tigers fell 2-0 while the boys lost 3-1. Both teams played at Lovejoy last night and will play at McIntosh on Saturday. In last Tuesday's game against Riverdale, the Tigers took control of the game early and continued to put pressure on the Riverdale holding the Raiders in their defensive zone. The Tigers turned up the heat taking 38 shots for the match and winning 12-0. Bryan Collier had three goals, while Carlos Moreira, Jay Page and Alex Crawford had two goals each. Single goals were scored by Trevor Mangan, Jaime Cooper, and Chris Dardis. "I thought that we passed the ball better tonight than we have so far," said Coach Ben Thacker. "We have to be patient, keep working together, and continue making good decisions with the ball." Jason Ross preserved the shutout for the Tigers in the second half when he made a brilliant save of a penalty kick. The Lady Tigers won 15-0 and got goals from Meghan Spalverio, Lauren Fetter, Sarah Oxford, Laura Stewart, Danielle Ashley, Claire Lewin, Jenny Ross, and Lena Watford. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs were slated to face Chapel Hill last Thursday but the game was postponed. Both the girls and boys teams will play at Newnan tonight with the girls playing at 7:30 p.m. after the boys game at 5:30 p.m.
