State basketball tournaments start this afternoon

A number of local basketball teams have qualified for the state basketball tournaments in their respective classifications. Fayette and Coweta County are represented by five teams in the AAAAA boys and girls state tournament, while Sandy Creek's boys are in the AAAA tournament and Landmark Christian School's girls are in the A tournament. The teams open up with one game this weekend at locations around the state.

Those hoping to follow East Coweta and Newnan's boys and girls or Fayette County's boys will not have far to go. All of those teams will play their opening games at Fayette County High School against teams from region 3-AAAAA on either Friday or Saturday.

The tournament kicks off at 4 p.m. today as the East Coweta girls (16-12) take on Camden County (23-4). The Lady Indians placed fourth at last weekend's region tournament and will face the region 3-AAAAA champs. Fayette County's boys, the fourth-place finisher in the region tournament, will face region 3-AAAAA champs Beach at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday's action starts at 4 p.m. with the Newnan Lady Cougars (16-9) taking on Bradwell Institute (25-4), the region 3-AAAAA runner-up. East Coweta's boys will follow at 5:30 p.m. with a game against Savannah and the night will conclude with Newnan's boys (16-9), the region 4-AAAAA runner-up, taking on Groves at 8:30 p.m.

Sandy Creek, the region 4-AAAA champs, will take on Statesboro at 8:30 p.m. tonight at Lithia Springs High School. To get to Lithia Springs High School, take 1-20 west to Exit 41 (Lee Road). Go left one mile to the traffic light at East County Line Rd. and turn right.

Landmark's Lady War Eagles will take on Towns County at 7 p.m. tonight at Whitefield Academy. To get to Whitefield Academy, exit onto South Cobb Dr. from I-285. Drive North on South Cobb Dr. and turn left at the first intersection, Highland Pkwy. Once on Highland Pkwy. turn left at the first light, which is Oakdale Rd. Travel .6 miles on Oakdale, then turn right onto Buckner Rd. Travel .5 miles on Buckner. The entrance to Whitefield Academy will be on your right.

A win in round one will send the teams to the sectionals beginning next Thursday. Teams in AAAAA wil play at Savannah State, while AAAA teams will head to Macon and Class A teams will play at Floyd College.
