Though the region 4-AAAAA basketball games were played at Starr's Mill High School, virtually in the backyards of the three Fayette schools in 4-AAAAA, the home court was not friendly to the local teams. Fayette County, Starr's Mill and McIntosh's girls teams were eliminated on Tuesday night, ending their seasons.

Fayette County lost to East Coweta 64-52 as Ashley Godfrey scored 23 points for the Lady Indians. The Lady Tigers were led by Stefanie Norman's 17 points but could not catch up with East Coweta at the end of the game. East Coweta met Riverdale last night after the paper went to press.

Starr's Mill fell to Carver, Columbus 57-33. The Lady Panthers played a good first half and hung in there but made too many turnovers in the third quarter and fell behind. Erica Harris led the team in scoring with 15 points, while Coach Bob Ferguson also cited good play from Kelly Caulfield and Ashley Marine.

McIntosh's Lady Chiefs hung in with Riverdale for most of the first half but Riverdale pulled away with under four minutes to go in the second quarter and established a 32-22 lead. Riverdale came out blazing in the third quarter and outscored McIntosh 19-7 in the quarter. The Lady Chiefs were led in scoring by Lindsay Murphy with 12 points, while Alice Lowery followed with 10 points.

The McIntosh boys lost on Wednesday night to Lovejoy, 70-42, while Fayette County defeated Riverdale 61-54. Matt Heckman led the Tigers with 21 points. East Coweta upset Carver, Columbus 47-46 thanks to the good foul shooting of Durrell Elom. Newnan defeated Starr's Mill 62-53 on Wednesday night. The Panthers leading scorer was Caleb Graham with 17 points, while Mike Mock finished with 15 points, eight of which came in the first quarter. Coach Carl Thomas also cited the play of Mike Defenbaugh who had seven points in the third quarter, when Starr's Mill took a brief lead.

Fayette County was slated to meet Lovejoy last night at 8:30 p.m., while East Coweta faced their county rival, Newnan at 5:30 p.m. All four teams have qualified for the AAAAA state tournament.

Our Lady of Mercy's Lady Bobcats lost to Cathedral in the first round of the region 49-34, but the game was much closer. The Lady Bobcats led 17-6 with less than two minutes in the first half and found themselves down by only four points after the third quarter. Our Lady of Mercy was playing short handed and banged up but gave a solid effort according to Coach Clay Cushman.

Sandy Creek got a 48-29 win over Alexander despite what Coach Jim Waller saw as some sluggish second half play. Jennifer Jaracz was the team's leading scorer with 12 points, while Tiffany Paschal added eight rebounds. Coach Waller also cited good play from Morgan Campbell and Ramsey Heft.

The win gave the Lady Patriots their 18th win of the season, which is good enough to tie a school record. They faced Pebblebrook last night after the paper went to press. If Sandy Creek won that game they will have qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history. Pebblebrook is the only region 4-AAAA team to sweep the Lady Patriots this year.
