SCAT take home four titles from state meet

SCAT brought home four championship titles from the Georgia Senior State meet in Augusta Dec. 12-15 and placed fifth overall. SCAT swimmers also set 14 new team records. Missing fourth place by only seven points, SCAT placed fifth out of about 20 teams from across the state.

"Our team looked great breaking into the top 5, and it is only going to get better," Head Coach Jamey Myers said. "Many swimmers had lifetime bests and showed they could compete with not very much rest."

Two swimmers each raced to first-place finishes in two events, edging out the fastest swimmers in Georgia. SCAT swimmer Billy Jamerson, 17, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Joseph Redmon, 16, a sophomore at Newnan High School, won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Jamerson also finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle. Redmon finished third in the 200-yard individual medley, fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, and seventh in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and in the 50-yard freestyle.

Lauren Cartwright, 14, an eighth-grader at Rising Starr Middle School, placed fifth in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, seventh in the 50-yard freestyle, eighth in the 200-yard butterfly, and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 IM. Kenny Jubb, 18, placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. He also swam personal best times in all six of his events.

Swimmers setting new team records include: Cartwright in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle, 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, 100- and 200-yard butterfly, and the 200 individual medley; Casey DeRidder, 13, in the 50-yard backstroke; Angela Gellatly, 16, in the 100-yard backstroke; Billy Jamerson in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke; Joseph Redmon in the 100-yard butterfly; and Brittany Stevens, 16, in the 100-yard butterfly.

"SCAT did a great job of providing team spirit and support from both parents and teammates, and it showed in all the excellent swimming," Myers said.

The men's relay team of Redmon, Jamerson, Jubb, and Chris Lee, 16, took second place in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. The relay team of Noah Copeland, 15, Redmon, Jubb and Jamerson took seventh place overall in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The women's relay team of Gellatly, Stevens, Cartwright, and Julia Redmon, 17, took third place in the 200-yard medley relay and sixth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The women's 400-yard medley relay team of Gellatly, Cartwright, Stevens and Redmon took eighth overall; the women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Redmon, Gellatly, Cartwright, and Nicole Roddenbery, 14, took ninth place; and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of DeRidder, Roddenbery, MacKenzie Garrot, 14, and Jessica Pratt, 15, took 10th. Katelyn Davis, 15, swam the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Lindsey Lochridge, 16, competed in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, while Thomas Lucak, 15, swam the 100-yard backstroke.

Swimmers achieving at least one personal best time include: Lauren Cartwright, Noah Copeland, Casey DeRidder, MacKenzie Garrot, Angela Gellatly, Billy Jamerson, Kenny Jubb, Chris Lee, Lindsey Lochridge, Thomas Lucak, Jessica Pratt, Joseph Redmon, Julia Redmon, Nicole Roddenbery and Brittany Stevens. SCAT Senior State qualifier Georgia Highsmith was unable to attend due to an injury.
